每个 Because… 从句须接在独立句之后。课程遵循 APA、CMOS 或 MLA 时,三项及以上列举使用系列逗号——UNC 逗号讲义较灵活,手册则不然。修饰语应紧靠其所描述的名词。勿让语法检查器决定现行手册规则。UNC 的 editing and proofreading handout 指出,这些工具基于有限规则集,常猜错。

十种失败,附官方检验

  • 一致(Agreement)。 找真正主语,而非最近的名词。The collection of samples 用 was,不用 were(模板)。APA 7 §4.15:动词与主语在数上一致。UNC:在 one of the problems that… 中,动词与 problems 一致。
  • Data。 CMOS 把 data 当作日常用法中的不可数名词(less data),或科学中的复数(fewer data)。不要把一种形式强加给每个领域。
  • Singular they。 APA 7 §4.18、CMOS 18 和 MLA Style Center 均接受泛指和指称性 they。写 they are,不写 they is。勿将某人表明的代词“纠正”为 he or she。
  • 逗号粘连 / 流水句。 两个独立分句需要句号、分号、破折号,或逗号加并列连词。单独逗号构成粘连。UNC:不能仅靠加逗号解决。
  • 残缺句。 Because… 分句在接到独立分句之前不是句子。
  • 系列逗号。 APA、CMOS 和 MLA 要求在三项及以上列举中,最后一个 and 或 or 前加逗号。UNC 在短列举中将末逗号视为可选。学术论文遵循指定手册,而非新闻编辑部或 UNC 的可选默认。
  • That / which。 限制性从句:that(无逗号)为美国学术默认。补充信息:which(有逗号)。That 不能引导非限制性从句。
  • 垂悬修饰语。 MLA:修饰了错误的词,或根本没有可修饰对象的短语,就是垂悬。A renowned author, her work… 没有可供作者附着的名词。
  • 平行列表。 系列中每一项必须共用一种语法形状。UNC:supporting…, reducing…, and education 就是失败模式。MLA:not only 放在统辖两项的动词之后。
  • 撇号。 MLA:it’s = it is;its 是所有格。姓名与星期的复数不加撇号:The Wallaces、Sundays。

修补模板(填入你的主张;带标签的模板不是论文)

一致模板,错误

The collection of samples were completed in March.

一致模板,正确

The collection of samples was completed in March.

分句边界模板

两个完整意思:句号、分号、破折号,或逗号 + and/but/or/so。不能只用逗号。

修饰语模板

Opening phrase + the person or thing that actually did it. Not the data, the paper, or the results.

本页是什么(以及不是什么)

当草稿有可标注的错误时使用本指南:动词与主语不一致、两句用逗号粘连、从属从句单独成句、修饰语挂在错误名词上、列举缺少指定手册要求的逗号。如何写得更清晰关乎选词与句律。主动与被动语态关乎选哪种语态。修改策略关乎流程。学术论文格式关乎标题、页边距和封面。引用标点关乎括号前后句号的位置。这些任务不在本 URL 范围内。

以下示例来自 17 September 2026 打开的页面:APA Style 网站(语法中心;列表概览经 21 September 2024 Wayback 副本;singular-they 页面经 29 December 2024 Wayback 副本;accessible-typography 页面最后更新 February 2024,经 Wayback)、APA student-paper formatting checklist PDF(© 2021;最后更新 8 September 2021)、Alamo Colleges 转载的 singular they(最后更新 29 May 2026, 1:38 PM)、CMOS Shop Talk(16 April 2024)、CMOS Q&A(除非另有说明仍标为 17th edition)、University of Chicago News(21 February 2025)、MLA Style Center 和 UNC Writing Center 讲义。

How do I use singular they?(4 March 2020)。旧版指南引用了 APA 和 Chicago 关于 they 的表述,对 MLA 仍含糊。本页填补该缺口。

官方原文(各语言版本均保留英文)

APA Style, Singular “they” (§4.18; last updated July 2022)

The singular “they” is a generic third-person singular pronoun in English. Use of the singular “they” is endorsed as part of APA Style because it is inclusive of all people and helps writers avoid making assumptions about gender.

APA Style, Singular “they” (verb agreement)

Use a plural verb form with the singular pronoun “they” (i.e., write “they are” not “they is”).

APA Style student-paper checklist, Grammar (Publication Manual §4.15)

Use verbs that agree in number (i.e., singular or plural) with their subjects.

APA Style student-paper checklist, Pronouns (Publication Manual §§4.16–4.21)

Use the singular “they” when referring to a person who uses it as their self-identified pronoun or to a person whose gender is unknown or irrelevant.

CMOS Shop Talk (announcing CMOS 18)

The generic singular they will now be considered acceptable even in formal writing—for example, when the antecedent is an indefinite pronoun (someone forgot their coat) or when referring to a person whose gender is unknown or irrelevant (will the driver of the yellow sedan please move their car) or whose identity must be concealed (the author wants their privacy protected).

University of Chicago News, 21 February 2025 (CMOS 18)

Though the 17th edition of the Manual had previously endorsed the use of “they/them” as a personal pronoun, the newest edition now explicitly endorses the use of the generic singular “they” when referring to a person whose gender is unknown or unspecified (for example, each student should bring their own lunch).

MLA Style Center, How do I use singular they? (4 March 2020)

The MLA advises writers to always follow the personal pronouns of individuals they write about.

MLA Style Center, Serial Commas and Serial Semicolons

Proponents of the serial comma, like the MLA, would decry the inconsistency of the use-it-when-you-need-it approach and advocate using the serial comma in all series of three or more items or phrases.

APA Style, Accessible typography (Myth 6; last updated February 2024)

Not everyone calls for the serial comma: APA’s Publication Manual, the MLA Handbook, the Chicago Manual of Style, and Elements of Style require it, whereas The Associated Press Stylebook leaves it optional.

APA Style, student-paper formatting checklist

Use a serial comma before the final element in lists of three or more items.

Chicago Manual of Style Q&A(Usage and Grammar #364)

Even though “data” doesn’t look like a plural, you would write “less data” or “fewer data” depending on whether you consider “data” as a mass noun (as in common usage) or as a plural (as in the sciences).

Chicago Manual of Style Q&A(Which vs. That)

The basic rule: Use “which” plus commas to set off nonrestrictive (unnecessary) clauses; use “that” to introduce a restrictive (necessary) clause:

UNC Writing Center, Fragments and Run-ons

You CANNOT simply add a comma between the two sentences, or you’ll end up with what’s called a “comma splice.”

MLA Style Center, dangling modifiers

When a modifier modifies the wrong word or has nothing to modify at all, writing experts say that the modifier dangles.

APA Style, Lists

When writing a list, ensure all items are syntactically and conceptually parallel.

Chelsea Lee 的 APA Style 博文 Welcome, singular “they”(31 October 2019)是指向 Publication Manual §4.18 的出版规则公告。CMOS Shop Talk 于 16 April 2024 发布 18th-edition 的 they 变更。University of Chicago News 于 21 February 2025 重申;旧 URL /story/chicago-manual-style-updated-18th-edition 现为 404。本次更新时 live APA singular-they HTML 被 Incapsula 拦截;上文 §4.18 句子与官方页 Wayback 副本(最后更新 July 2022)及同 Style Center 措辞的 Alamo Colleges reprint(最后更新 29 May 2026)一致。

主谓一致(包括 data 与 one of the)

动词与主语中心词一致,而非与介词短语中的名词或最近复数一致。插入词是常见陷阱。APA 清单以一句重述 Publication Manual §4.15。标注模板之后,是学生常漏的 UNC 关系从句情形:

中心名词,不是最近的名词(模板)

模板,错误

The collection of samples were completed in March.

模板,正确

The collection of samples was completed in March.

模板,错误

Each of the participants were given a questionnaire.

模板,正确

Each of the participants was given a questionnaire.

即使后面跟复数名词,Each 仍是单数。第一对的主语是 collection,不是 samples。

UNC 关系分句讲义 是 one of the… 结构的官方已做案例。关系分句中的动词与关系代词所替代的名词一致——problem(单数)或 problems(复数)——而不是与 one 一致。

UNC Writing Center (relative clauses)

UNC,复数

People who win the lottery are lucky. (plural verb)

UNC,单数

A person who wins the lottery every year is lucky. (singular verb)

UNC,that 与 problem 一致

Homelessness is a problem that needs to be addressed. (singular problem)

UNC,that 与 problems 一致

Homelessness is one of the problems that need to be addressed. (plural problems)

data 是单数还是复数?

旧课堂规则“data is always plural”已非全貌。CMOS Q&A on *less* vs *fewer* 对 data 作两种处理并给出两则官方例句。同一答复偏好复数名词用 fewer(fewer CO₂ emissions)、物质名词用 less(less CO₂)。匹配期刊或实验室的 house style:许多科学编辑仍要复数动词;CMOS 在普通散文中允许物质名词读法。一篇论文内保持一致。Q&A 除非另有说明仍标 CMOS 17;data 组合在 18th-edition 公告中未变。

Chicago Manual of Style Q&A #364

CMOS,data 作不可数名词

We had a lot less data to support our hypothesis than we wanted. [data as mass noun]

CMOS,data 作复数名词

The second group of researchers returned fewer data than the first. [data as a plural noun]

CMOS, emissions (official preference)

fewer CO₂ emissions, but less CO₂ (carbon dioxide is a mass—or noncount—noun: CO₂ is; CO₂ emissions are)

CMOS:后者用法,含 fewer,为 AMA Manual of Style(10th ed., §7.8.2)所支持。同一答复称 lower emissions 是较好替代;less emissions 无法满足较真者。

拉丁语成对词在正式写作中仍要分开:criterion / criteria、phenomenon / phenomena、medium / media。写 the criteria are 和 this criterion is。不要把 criteria 当单数。

代词:singular they 已非含糊表述——包括 MLA

2026-08-30 版本页称 APA 7 和 CMOS 18 认可 singular they,MLA 沉默。这不完整。MLA Style Center 的 How do I use singular they?(发布 4 March 2020)要求作者遵循某人表明的代词,并鼓励泛指 they 以免句子捏造性别。APA 7 §4.18 认可泛指 they。CMOS 18 在正式文体中认可泛指 they。二者在某人使用 they 时已要求指称性 they。现今失败模式与 2015 年相反:勿在遵循 APA、Chicago 或 MLA 的论文中将 they “修正”为 he or she。

MLA Style Center (singular they)

MLA, specific use

Jules is writing their research paper on Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

MLA, specific use, reflexive

Ari read the instructions to themselves [or themself] before beginning the test.

MLA, generic (do not invent a gender)

Each taxpayer must file his or her tax return before 15 April.

MLA, generic, singular they

Each taxpayer must file their tax return before 15 April.

MLA, generic, they after When a celebrity

When a celebrity joins Twitter they gain tens of thousands of followers within minutes.

MLA, anonymous reviewer

The anonymous reviewer recommends in their report that the essay be published after minor revisions.

MLA, Everyone

Everyone wants to do well on their midterm.

MLA:泛指时,作者不应单独使用 he 或 she,也不应交替使用 he 和 she。改为复数或去代词改写亦可。勿将这些变通用于回避某人表明的 they。

APA Style and CMOS 18 (what to write)

APA / CMOS 18, generic (official CMOS example)

someone forgot their coat

APA / CMOS 18, generic (UChicago News example)

each student should bring their own lunch

APA Style, official form table (Casey)

Casey is a gender-fluid person. They are from Texas and enjoy tacos.

APA verb form

they are (not they is)

APA noun form

Casey is or a person is (not Casey are or a person are)

不要编造性别

不要把 he 当通指。APA:不要用 (s)he 或 s/he 这类组合形式。只有当这些代词确实对应所描述的人时,才用 he or she。

当 they 听起来别扭时

APA allows a rewrite that drops the pronoun, or a plural recast (Students must submit their assignments). Do not use those workarounds to avoid a person’s stated they.

先行词不清仍是错误。如果 they 既可能指研究者也可能指参与者,就点出名词。那是指称问题,不是禁止单数 they 的理由。

先行词不清(模板)

模板,不清

The researchers discussed the results with the participants, and they were satisfied.

模板,清楚

The researchers discussed the results with the participants, and the participants were satisfied.

逗号粘连、run-on 与 FANBOYS

UNC fragments-and-run-ons handout 和 UNC commas handout 是实例。完整句需主语、谓语和完整意思。连续两个则需真正边界。逗号不是该边界。UNC 最短完整句为 They waited. UNC 亦将 em-dash 列为合法流水句修复;逗号仍不可。

UNC Writing Center (run-on and comma splice)

UNC, shortest complete sentence

They waited.

UNC,run-on(熔合句)

My favorite Mediterranean spread is hummus it is very garlicky.

UNC, em-dash

UNC,逗号粘连(非法“修正”)

My favorite Mediterranean spread is hummus, it is very garlicky.

若不确定是否为流水句,UNC 转载 Rei R. Noguchi 在 Grammar and the Teaching of Writing 中的两个测试:将句改为一个 yes/no 问句,再改为一个附加问句。完整句能通过两项测试。融合句不能。

UNC / Noguchi tests (official hummus pair)

UNC, yes/no on a complete sentence

Is my favorite Mediterranean spread hummus?

UNC, tag on a complete sentence

My favorite Mediterranean spread is hummus, isn’t it?

UNC, the fused sentence fails the single-question test

Is my favorite Mediterranean spread hummus is it very garlicky?

UNC 逗号讲义用 FANBOYS — for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so — 作为可用逗号连接两个独立分句的唯一并列连词。However、therefore、moreover 为连接副词。其前用句号或分号,其后用逗号,不能在粘连两侧各加逗号。同一讲义否定两个逗号迷思:长句不自动需要逗号,换气停顿不是逗号测试。

UNC Writing Center (commas)

UNC,逗号粘连

My hamster loved to play, I gave him a hula-hoop.

UNC, second splice

You wore a lovely hat, it was your only defense.

UNC,连接副词,也正确

Basketball is my favorite sport. However, table tennis is where I excel.

UNC,连接副词,错误

残缺句

UNC:学生常漏的片段是从属从句。有主语和动词,看似完整,但从属连词(because, after, when, since, if, although)使意思未完成。将从句接在独立句后,或去掉从属连词。单独 Because… 从句后 UNC 的测试问题仍是 What did they do?

UNC Writing Center (fragments)

They took the bus because their car was in the shop.

UNC, fragment (time)

After the rain stops

UNC, fragment (condition)

When you finally take the test

模板,-ing 残缺句

Fragment: The participants ranging in age from 18 to 65. Complete: The participants ranged in age from 18 to 65.

系列逗号:APA、CMOS、MLA 一致——UNC 为灵活例外

三项及以上列举中,若论文遵循 APA、CMOS 或 MLA,在最后一个 and 或 or 前加逗号。APA 的 lists overview 要求末项前加逗号(项内已有逗号则用分号)。accessible-typography page(最后更新 February 2024)称系列逗号可选是迷思:Publication Manual、MLA Handbook、CMOS 和 The Elements of Style 要求逗号;AP Style 为可选。UNC 的 commas handout 是唯一仍称短而简单列举中末逗号可选、仅项变长时才必需的学术页。那是写作中心便利,非 APA / MLA / CMOS 规则。指定手册为三者之一则保留逗号。逗号造成新歧义则改写——勿删逗号。

官方系列逗号例句

APA Style, accessible typography (no serial comma)

Jiji the cat likes sleeping in the sun, cuddles and treats.

APA Style, accessible typography (serial comma)

APA Style, Tasha is not the sister

I bought presents for my sister, my father, and Tasha.

APA Style, Tasha is the sister

I bought presents for my father and my sister, Tasha.

APA Style, rewrite rather than drop the comma

I play basketball with Lebron James, Sheryl Swoops, and my son.

MLA Style Center, ambiguous without the comma

Lia ordered three smoothies: strawberry, peach and mango and pineapple.

MLA Style Center, why that sentence fails

Without a serial comma placed after peach or after mango, it isn’t clear if “peach and mango” is one flavor or if “mango and pineapple” is.

MLA Style Center, second ambiguity

Sam took his dog for a walk and ran into Deirdre, a friend and his dentist.

MLA Style Center 的 serial commas and serial semicolons 页(15 June 2017;旧 URL /serial-commas-and-serial-semicolons/ 现为 404)亦指向真实 overtime 案例:Daniel Victor 的 16 March 2017 *New York Times* report(缅因州卡车司机争议)。MLA 要点非一桩诉讼改写手册,而是“需要时才用逗号”的习惯制造了歧义。项内已有逗号则将分隔符升为分号。规则同 APA 列表页、MLA Style Center 的 Suzette Tanner 例和 UNC 的 semicolons handout。

官方系列分号例句

UNC Writing Center, semicolons

I bought shiny, ripe apples; small, sweet, juicy grapes; and firm pears.

MLA Style Center, four speakers

The invited speakers are the association’s president; the vice president; the councilwoman, Suzette Tanner; and Walter McCarthy, the executive director.

关系分句:that versus which

学术默认来自 CMOS 的 Which vs. That Q&A 和 UNC 的 relative-clauses handout。限制性从句指明所指名词;用 that,无逗号。非限制性从句补充信息;用 which(或 who)且两侧有逗号。That 不能引导非限制性从句。短规则隐藏的两点:UNC 接受限制性从句中的 which(部分读者反对;that 更宜)。CMOS 称限制性 which 在英式英语中去掉逗号则“大致可接受”。美国学术论文仍应以 that 为必要从句默认。Q&A 仍引 CMOS 17 §§6.27 和 5.250;Shop Talk 的 18th-edition 列表未改写 that / which 组合。

官方 that / which 例句

CMOS Q&A, official rewrite of the tax-act sentence

The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, which became law on June 7, 2001, is the largest change in tax regulations in over two decades.

CMOS Q&A, restrictive

Pizza that’s less than an inch deep just isn’t Chicago-style.

CMOS Q&A, non-restrictive

Pizza, which is a favorite among Chicagoans, can be either bad for you or good, depending on how much of it you eat.

CMOS Q&A, restrictive which (British, no commas)

Pianos which have a fourth pedal to mute the strings are popular among apartment owners.

垂悬修饰语

MLA Style Center 及其 five common grammar questions 为官方实例。句首修饰语须描述下一个名词。若该名词非动作执行者,短语即悬垂。本页旧模板(Using regression analysis, the data…)仍是失败模式;下列行为 MLA 自有句子。MLA 一个命名例外:短语可修饰整句情境(Given the weather conditions, schools and offices closed for the day.),而非下一名词。

MLA Style Center (apostrophes, hyphens, because)

MLA,缩约 versus 所有格

MLA,复数不加撇号

For family names and any other proper noun, leave out the apostrophe to make them plural: “The Wallaces,” “Sundays.”

MLA,给复合形容词加连字符

In phrases like “problem-solving strategies” and “event-planning guidelines,” hyphens make sense.

MLA,不要给名词短语加连字符

I have seen references to “the world-order,” “advanced problem-solving,” and “event-planning.” But these phrases don’t need hyphens.

MLA,否定后歧义的 because

He did not learn anything that day because he was asleep in class.

MLA,because 前的逗号

He did not learn anything that day, because he was asleep in class.

CMOS 18 also changed one colon rule that still trips students who learned CMOS 17: Shop Talk’s announcement says the first word of a grammatically complete sentence after a colon now takes an initial capital. UNC’s semicolons, colons, and dashes handout is more flexible — it lets either capital or lowercase stand if you stay consistent — so a Chicago paper should follow CMOS 18, not UNC’s optional pair. Decade plurals and initialism plurals still take no apostrophe. The rows below are usage templates — they are not quotations from a paper.

仍属语法的学科备注

时态与无偏见措辞与语法相邻,因正确句仍可能违反 house rule。这些不是第二份清晰指南。它们是拼写检查拦不住的错误。University of Chicago News

科学编辑往往保持 data 为复数(the data show)不要在同一篇里从 data are 换成 data is
CMOS 18 prose冒号后的完整句大写;指人时大写 Indigenous不要在完整句冒号后保留 CMOS 17 的小写

一次只校对一种错误

UNC 的 editing and proofreading handout 区分编辑(论点、结构、证据)与校对(表面语法与标点)。校对放最后。距离有助:放下草稿、改变页面外观,或交给初读读者。语法检查器为可选助手,非手册。同一讲义在自身散文中植入七个故意错误;勿将那些植入失误当作 UNC 推荐措辞。

UNC proofreading moves that catch grammar

  • 不要完全依赖拼写检查。它们漏掉 your / you're、to / too 和 there / their。
  • 把语法检查器的标记当作假设。UNC:这些程序按有限规则工作,常常出错。
  • 一次只校对一种错误。
  • 读得慢,每个词都读。出声读,以便听见分句边界。
  • 把文本拆成单独的句子,或用尺子隔开每一行。

  • 拼写按词倒读;语法按句读。
  • 查阅你不确定的情况。UNC 的测验题仍是 Should you use “that” instead of “which”?

  • 在 APA 7、CMOS 18 或 MLA 要求处使用 singular they;无残留泛指 he
  • 没有逗号粘连;however 没有只用逗号连接分句
  • 没有从属分句残缺
  • 指定手册为 APA、CMOS 或 MLA 时,三项及以上列举均有系列逗号(项内已有逗号则用系列分号)
  • 限定分句用无逗号的 that;附加信息用带逗号的 which
  • 开场修饰语附着于下一个名词;没有 A renowned author, her work…
  • 列表平行;not only 在统辖动词之后
  • 撇号只表所有格或缩约,从不用于复数年份、PhDs 或 Sundays
  • 休息之后已出声读过草稿

常见问题

学术写作中最常见的语法错误是什么?
标注集中在十类失误:主谓一致(尤其插入名词与 one of the…)、data 按 house style 所拒形式处理、APA 7、CMOS 18、MLA 认可 singular they 后的过时 he or she、逗号粘连、Because… 片段、缺失系列逗号、that / which 逗号、悬垂开头、不并列列举(含 not only… but also)、复数撇号。先查这些再寻罕见用法。
APA、Chicago 和 MLA 允许单数 they 吗?
是。APA 7 已认可(§4.18;student-paper checklist §§4.16–4.21)。写 they are,不写 they is。使用某人表明的代词,含 they。CMOS 18 在正式文体中接受泛指 singular they(someone forgot their coat;each student should bring their own lunch),17th edition 已接受指称性 they。MLA Style Center(4 March 2020)要求遵循表明代词(Jules… their research paper)并鼓励泛指 they(Each taxpayer must file their tax return)。课程用 APA、Chicago 或 MLA 时,勿为显得更正式而将 they “修正”为 he or she。
学术写作中 data 是单数还是复数?
CMOS Q&A #364: treat data as a mass noun in common usage (less data) or as a plural in the sciences (fewer data). The same answer prefers fewer CO₂ emissions and less CO₂. AMA still supports the plural reading. Pick the journal’s form and keep it. Do not write the data shows in one paragraph and the data show in the next.
如何修正逗号粘连?
UNC:不能在两个完整句之间只加逗号。用句号、分号、em-dash、逗号加 and/but/or/so/yet/for/nor,或从属词(because、although)。
何时用 that,何时用 which?
CMOS Q&A 与 UNC 的美国学术默认规则:that(无逗号)限定所指——Pizza that's less than an inch deep;the paintings that hang in the SASB North lobby。Which(有逗号)补充信息——Pizza, which is a favorite among Chicagoans; The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, which became law on June 7, 2001。That 不能引导补充信息从句。Who 对人起同样作用。无逗号的限制性 which 在英式英语中可容忍;勿作美国课堂默认。
研究论文中的垂悬修饰语是什么?
MLA:开头修饰错误名词或无名词。A renowned author, her work has received several awards 使作者无修饰对象。Using regression analysis, the data showed… 使数据成分析者。Tired and cranky, Jack's morning cup of coffee… 使咖啡疲惫。将实际执行动作的人或物紧接逗号之后,或改写使开头不必存在。MLA 例外为修饰整句情境的短语:Given the weather conditions, schools and offices closed for the day.
