Because…

The collection of samples は were ではなく was を取る(テンプレート)。APA 7 §4.15:動詞は主語の数に一致する。UNC:one of the problems that… では、動詞は problems に一致する。
  • Data。CMOSはdataを、一般用法では質量名詞(less data)、科学では複数(fewer data)として扱う。どの分野にも一つの形を押しつけない。
  • Singular they。 APA 7 §4.18、CMOS 18、MLA Style Center はすべて、一般的および指示的な they を認める。they is ではなく they are と書く。人物の表明した代名詞を he or she に「修正」しない。
  • コンマの接続 / ランオン。 2つの独立節には、ピリオド、セミコロン、ダッシュ、または等位接続詞付きのコンマが必要である。コンマだけでは接続になる。UNC:コンマを足すだけでは済まない。
  • 文断片。Because…節は、独立節に結びつくまで文ではない。
  • シリアルコンマ。 APA、CMOS、MLA は、3項目以上の列挙で最後の and または or の前にコンマを要求する。UNC は短い列挙では最後のコンマを任意とする。学術論文は、ニュース編集部でも UNC の任意規定でもなく、指定されたマニュアルに従う。
  • That / which。 限定節:that(コンマなし)が米国学術のデフォルト。付加情報:which(コンマあり)。That は非限定節を開くことはできない。
  • ぶら下がり修飾語。MLA:何も修飾しない、または誤った名詞を修飾する句はぶら下がる。A renowned author, her work…には、著者を結びつける名詞がない。
  • 並列リスト。列挙の各項目は同じ文法形を共有しなければならない。UNC:supporting…, reducing…, and educationが失敗形。MLA:not onlyは両方の項目を支配する動詞の後に置く。
  • アポストロフィ。MLA:it’s = it is;itsは所有格。

以下の例は 17 September 2026 に開いたページに基づく:APA Style ウェブサイト(文法ハブ;リスト概要は 21 September 2024 の Wayback コピー経由;singular-they ページは 29 December 2024 の Wayback コピー経由;accessible-typography ページは February 2024 最終更新、Wayback 経由)、APA student-paper formatting checklist PDF(© 2021;最終更新 8 September 2021)、Alamo Colleges の singular they 再掲(最終更新 29 May 2026, 1:38 PM)、CMOS Shop Talk(16 April 2024)、CMOS Q&A(特記なき限り 17th edition タグ)、University of Chicago News(21 February 2025)、MLA Style Center、UNC Writing Center 資料。

How do I use singular they?(4 March 2020)。旧版ガイドは APA と Chicago の they を引用し MLA を曖昧に残していた。そのギャップは本ページで解消する。

公式の文言(どの言語でも英語のままにする)

APA Style, Singular “they” (§4.18; last updated July 2022)

The singular “they” is a generic third-person singular pronoun in English. Use of the singular “they” is endorsed as part of APA Style because it is inclusive of all people and helps writers avoid making assumptions about gender.

APA Style, Singular “they” (verb agreement)

Use a plural verb form with the singular pronoun “they” (i.e., write “they are” not “they is”).

APA Style student-paper checklist, Grammar (Publication Manual §4.15)

Use verbs that agree in number (i.e., singular or plural) with their subjects.

APA Style student-paper checklist, Pronouns (Publication Manual §§4.16–4.21)

Use the singular “they” when referring to a person who uses it as their self-identified pronoun or to a person whose gender is unknown or irrelevant.

CMOS Shop Talk (announcing CMOS 18)

The generic singular they will now be considered acceptable even in formal writing—for example, when the antecedent is an indefinite pronoun (someone forgot their coat) or when referring to a person whose gender is unknown or irrelevant (will the driver of the yellow sedan please move their car) or whose identity must be concealed (the author wants their privacy protected).

University of Chicago News, 21 February 2025 (CMOS 18)

Though the 17th edition of the Manual had previously endorsed the use of “they/them” as a personal pronoun, the newest edition now explicitly endorses the use of the generic singular “they” when referring to a person whose gender is unknown or unspecified (for example, each student should bring their own lunch).

MLA Style Center, How do I use singular they? (4 March 2020)

The MLA advises writers to always follow the personal pronouns of individuals they write about.

MLA Style Center, Serial Commas and Serial Semicolons

Proponents of the serial comma, like the MLA, would decry the inconsistency of the use-it-when-you-need-it approach and advocate using the serial comma in all series of three or more items or phrases.

APA Style, Accessible typography (Myth 6; last updated February 2024)

Not everyone calls for the serial comma: APA’s Publication Manual, the MLA Handbook, the Chicago Manual of Style, and Elements of Style require it, whereas The Associated Press Stylebook leaves it optional.

APA Style, student-paper formatting checklist

Use a serial comma before the final element in lists of three or more items.

Chicago Manual of Style Q&A (Usage and Grammar #364)

Even though “data” doesn’t look like a plural, you would write “less data” or “fewer data” depending on whether you consider “data” as a mass noun (as in common usage) or as a plural (as in the sciences).

Chicago Manual of Style Q&A (Which vs. That)

The basic rule: Use “which” plus commas to set off nonrestrictive (unnecessary) clauses; use “that” to introduce a restrictive (necessary) clause:

UNC Writing Center, Fragments and Run-ons

You CANNOT simply add a comma between the two sentences, or you’ll end up with what’s called a “comma splice.”

MLA Style Center, dangling modifiers

When a modifier modifies the wrong word or has nothing to modify at all, writing experts say that the modifier dangles.

APA Style, Lists

When writing a list, ensure all items are syntactically and conceptually parallel.

Chelsea Lee の APA Style 投稿 Welcome, singular “they”(31 October 2019)は、Publication Manual §4.18 を指す出版規則の告知である。CMOS Shop Talk は 18th-edition の they 変更を 16 April 2024 に公開した。University of Chicago News は 21 February 2025 に再掲した;旧 URL /story/chicago-manual-style-updated-18th-edition は現在 404。ライブ APA singular-they HTML は今回の更新で Incapsula ブロック;上記 §4.18 の文は公式ページの Wayback コピー(最終更新 July 2022)と同じ Style Center 文言の Alamo Colleges reprint(最終更新 29 May 2026)と一致する。

主語と動詞の一致(dataとone of theを含む)

動詞は前置詞句内の名詞や最も近い複数形ではなく、主語の中心語に一致する。挟まれた語が典型的な罠である。APA のチェックリストは Publication Manual §4.15 を一文で再掲する。ラベル付きテンプレートの後に、学生が実際に見落とす UNC の関係節のケース:

dataは単数か複数か?

旧来の教室規則「data is always plural」はもはや全体像ではない。CMOS Q&A on *less* vs *fewer* は data を2通りで扱い、両方の公式例文を示す。同じ回答は複数名詞には fewer(fewer CO₂ emissions)、物質名詞には less(less CO₂)を好む。雑誌や研究室の house style に合わせる:多くの科学編集者は依然として複数動詞を求める;CMOS は日常の散文では物質名詞の読みも許す。1本の論文内では一貫させる。Q&A は特記なき限り CMOS 17 タグ;data の組み合わせは 18th-edition 告知で変更されていない。

Chicago Manual of Style Q&A #364

CMOS、質量名詞としてのdata

We had a lot less data to support our hypothesis than we wanted. [data as mass noun]

CMOS、複数名詞としてのdata

The second group of researchers returned fewer data than the first. [data as a plural noun]

CMOS, emissions (official preference)

fewer CO₂ emissions, but less CO₂ (carbon dioxide is a mass—or noncount—noun: CO₂ is; CO₂ emissions are)

CMOS:後者の用法、fewer を含むものは、AMA Manual of Style(10th ed., §7.8.2)が支持する用法である。同じ回答は lower emissions が良い代替と述べる;less emissions は厳格派を満たさない。

ラテン語の対は、形式的な文章ではまだ分かれます:criterion / criteria、phenomenon / phenomena、medium / media。the criteria areとthis criterion isと書きます。criteriaを単数として扱わないでください。

代名詞:singular they はもはや曖昧表現ではない — MLA も含めて

2026-08-30 版の本ページは、APA 7 と CMOS 18 が singular they を認め MLA は沈黙としていた。それは不完全である。MLA Style Center の How do I use singular they?(公開 4 March 2020)は、作家に人物の表明した代名詞に従い、性別を作り出さないよう一般的な they を奨励する。APA 7 §4.18 は一般的な they を認める。CMOS 18 は正式な文体で一般的な they を認める。両者は、人物が they を使う場合の指示的 they は既に要求していた。現在の失敗モードは 2015 年の逆である:APA、Chicago、MLA に従う論文で they を he or she に「修正」しない。

シリアルコンマ:APA、CMOS、MLA は一致 — UNC が柔軟な例外

3項目以上の列挙では、論文が APA、CMOS、MLA に従う場合、最後の and または or の前にコンマを置く。APA の lists overview は最終項目の前にコンマ(項目内にコンマがある場合はセミコロン)を要求する。accessible-typography page(最終更新 February 2024)は、シリアルコンマ任意説を迷思と呼ぶ:Publication Manual、MLA Handbook、CMOS、The Elements of Style はコンマを要求する;AP Style は任意。UNC の commas handout は、短く単純な列挙では最後のコンマを任意とし、項目が長くなる場合のみ必須とする唯一の学術ページである。それはライティングセンターの便宜であり、APA / MLA / CMOS の規則ではない。指定マニュアルが3つのいずれかならコンマを保持する。コンマが新たな曖昧さを生む場合は書き直す — コンマを落とさない。

関係節:that versus which

学術のデフォルトは CMOS の Which vs. That Q&A と UNC の relative-clauses handout である。限定節はどの名詞を指すかを特定する;that を取りコンマは付けない。非限定節は付加情報を加える;which(または who)と両側のコンマを取る。That は非限定節を開けない。短い規則が隠す2つのニュアンス:UNC は限定節で which を認める(一部の読者は反対;that が推奨)。CMOS は限定用法の which は英語ではコンマを外せば「おおむね可」とする。米国学術論文は必要節には依然として that をデフォルトとすべきである。Q&A は依然として CMOS 17 §§6.27 と 5.250 を引用;Shop Talk の 18th-edition リストは that / which の組を書き換えていない。

CMOS 18 also changed one colon rule that still trips students who learned CMOS 17: Shop Talk’s announcement says the first word of a grammatically complete sentence after a colon now takes an initial capital. UNC’s semicolons, colons, and dashes handout is more flexible — it lets either capital or lowercase stand if you stay consistent — so a Chicago paper should follow CMOS 18, not UNC’s optional pair. Decade plurals and initialism plurals still take no apostrophe. The rows below are usage templates — they are not quotations from a paper.

IMRaDの方法と結果行ったことと分かったことには過去形;成り立つ主張には現在形結果表で文学的現在に流れ込まない
文学(MLAの教室)文学的現在:ページ上のテクストにはHamlet saysであり、Hamlet saidではない歴史的出来事は過去形のまま
APA papers第5章のバイアスのない言語、単数のtheyを含む(§4.18 / §5.5)総称の参加者に既定でheを使わない
科学編集者しばしばdataを複数のままにする(the data show)論文の途中でdata areからdata isに切り替えない

UNC proofreading moves that catch grammar

  • スペルチェッカーに全面依存しない。your / you're、to / too、there / theirを見落とす。
Should you use “that” instead of “which”?である。

提出前に

  • すべての動詞が本当の主語と一致している(one of the…節を含む)
  • Data、criteria、phenomena
A renowned author, her work…がない
  • リストは並列;not onlyは支配する動詞の後にある
  • アポストロフィは所有または縮約であり、年の複数、PhDs、Sundaysではない
  • 休憩のあと、下書きを声に出して読んだ

よくある質問

学術論文でいちばんよくある文法の誤りは何か?
指摘は10の失敗に集中する:主語と動詞の一致(特に挟まれた名詞と one of the…)、house style が拒否した形式として扱われた data、APA 7、CMOS 18、MLA が singular they を認めた後の古い he or she、コンマの接続、Because… 断片、欠落したシリアルコンマ、that / which のコンマ、ぶら下がる文頭、非並列の列挙(not only… but also を含む)、複数形のアポストロフィ。珍しい用法を探す前にそこから始める。
APA、Chicago、MLAで単数のtheyは認められるか?
はい。APA 7 では認められている(§4.18;student-paper checklist §§4.16–4.21)。they is ではなく they are と書く。人物の表明した代名詞、they を含めて使う。CMOS 18 は正式な文体で一般的な singular they を認める(someone forgot their coat;each student should bring their own lunch)し、17th edition では指示的 they は既に認めていた。MLA Style Center(4 March 2020)は表明した代名詞に従うよう述べる(Jules… their research paper)し、一般的な they を奨励する(Each taxpayer must file their tax return)。コースが APA、Chicago、MLA を使う場合、より正式に見せるために they を he or she に「修正」しない。
学術論文でdataは単数か複数か?
CMOS Q&A #364: treat data as a mass noun in common usage (less data) or as a plural in the sciences (fewer data). The same answer prefers fewer CO₂ emissions and less CO₂. AMA still supports the plural reading. Pick the journal’s form and keep it. Do not write the data shows in one paragraph and the data show in the next.
カンマスプライスをどう直すか?
UNC:2つの完全な文の間にコンマを足すだけでは済まない。ピリオド、セミコロン、em-dash、コンマ+and/but/or/so/yet/for/nor、または従属語(because、although)を使う。
CMOS Q&A と UNC からの米国学術のデフォルト規則:that(コンマなし)はどの物を指すかを限定する — Pizza that's less than an inch deep;the paintings that hang in the SASB North lobby。Which(コンマ)は付加情報を加える — Pizza, which is a favorite among Chicagoans; The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, which became law on June 7, 2001。That は付加情報の節を開けない。Who は人について同じ役割を果たす。コンマなしの限定 which は英語では容認される;米国教室のデフォルトとして扱わない。
研究論文のぶら下がり修飾語とは何か?
MLA:文頭は誤った名詞、または名詞なしを描写する。A renowned author, her work has received several awards は著者に修飾対象を残さない。Using regression analysis, the data showed… はデータを分析者にする。Tired and cranky, Jack's morning cup of coffee… はコーヒーを疲れさせる。実際に動作した人物や物をコンマの直後に置くか、文頭が不要なよう書き直す。MLA の例外は文全体の状況を修飾する句である:Given the weather conditions, schools and offices closed for the day.
Grammarly
