学術論文を明確に書く方法
明確な学術文は、短い主語を本当の動詞の隣に置き、新しい情報を読者が強調を期待する位置に置きます。このページは、Publication Manual §§4.1–4.11についてAPA 7の学生論文チェックリスト(最終更新2021年9月8日)、Turabianの5つの文の原則(Student’s Guide to Writing College Papers、第5版、p. 148)、Nature Portfolioの「How to write your paper」、UNCのWord Choice、Style、Scientific Writing、Reorganizing Draftsのハンドアウト、そしてGopenとSwanの1990年American Scientist論文「The Science of Scientific Writing」に従います。文レベルの書き換えです。読者の判断でも、文法の誤りの地図でも、能動態対受動態の選択でもありません。

すぐ分かる答え: 学術論文を明確に書く方法
短く具体的な主語を名指しし、本当の行為を動詞に置き、その二つを隣り合わせにします。既知の情報を先に、新しい主張を文末に置きます。同じ精度なら日常語を優先します。術語や略語は初めて必要になるときに定義し、その後はその語をそのまま再利用します。「it is important to note that」のような中身のない書き出しを削ります。問題が動詞を誰が行うかであるときだけ態ガイドを指し、文が実際に非文法的であるときだけ文法の誤りを指します。
書き換えテンプレート(自分の主張を入れる。データを捏造しない)
主語+動詞を先に:
誰が、または何が、何をしたか。そのあと制限、方法、例外。
行為を動詞に:
「the implementation of X resulted in Y」ではなく「X did Y」。
既知のあと新規:
文頭に古い情報。知見、数値、主張は文末。
初出で用語:
正式名称(ABBR)、その後はABBR。直後に定義する最初の重要用語はイタリック(APA §6.22)。
飾らず削る:
「the fact that」「it should be noted that」「it is interesting that」を削除する(UNC Sciences)。残った節を残す。
米国心理学会は、Publication Manual(第7版)第4章を学生論文チェックリストで言い直しています。ハンドアウトの日付は© 2021、最終更新は2021年9月8日です。連続性、簡潔さ、明確さは三つの別個のチェックリスト欄であり、隠語の文は欄ごとに同一ではありません。
APA Style学生論文チェックリスト、連続性(Publication Manual §§4.1–4.3)
Check for continuity in words, concepts, and thematic development across the paper. Explain relationships between ideas clearly. Present ideas in a logical order. Use clear transitions to smoothly connect sentences, paragraphs, and ideas.
APA Style学生論文チェックリスト、簡潔さ(Publication Manual §§4.4–4.6)
Choose words and phrases carefully and deliberately. Eliminate wordiness, redundancy, evasiveness, circumlocution, overuse of the passive voice, and clumsy prose.
Do not use jargon, contractions, or colloquialisms.
Avoid overusing both short, simple sentences and long, involved sentences; instead, use varied sentence lengths.
Avoid both single-sentence paragraphs and paragraphs longer than one double-spaced page.
APA Style学生論文チェックリスト、明確さ(Publication Manual §§4.7–4.11)
Use clear and precise language. Use a professional tone and professional language.
Do not use jargon, contractions, colloquialisms, or creative literary devices.
Check for anthropomorphistic language (i.e., attributing human actions to inanimate objects or nonhuman animals).
Make logical comparisons using clear word choice and sentence structure.
Gopen and Swan、「The Science of Scientific Writing」(1990)
We argue here that complexity of thought need not lead to impenetrability of expression.
The fundamental purpose of scientific discourse is not the mere presentation of information and thought, but rather its actual communication.
It does not matter how pleased an author might be to have converted all the right data into sentences and paragraphs; it matters only whether a large majority of the reading audience accurately perceives what the author had in mind.
UNCのWord ChoiceとStyleのハンドアウトは、「賢く聞こえる」ことを目指す学生に同じことを言います。
UNC Writing Center、「Word Choice」
But the most important goal of academic writing is not to sound smart—it is to communicate an argument or information clearly and convincingly.
Using simple words does not indicate simple thoughts.
In an academic argument paper, what makes the thesis and argument sophisticated are the connections presented in simple, clear language.
UNC Writing Center、「Style」
First, remember that your goal in academic writing is not to sound intelligent, but to get your intelligent point across.
精確な日常語を選ぶ
APA §§4.4–4.9もUNCも、水増しを拒みます。科学ライティングのハンドアウトは、学生が見落とす精度の門を加えます。日常語を選ぶのは、それが技術的な区別を捨てない場合に限ります。
UNC Writing Center、「Scientific Writing」
When given a choice between a familiar and a technical or obscure term, the more familiar term is preferable if it doesn’t reduce precision.
| 複雑 | 簡潔 |
|---|---|
| efficacious | effective |
| utilize | use |
| elucidate | explain |
| proximal | close |
UNC自身の精度の対が、凝った語が正しいときを示します。方法や結果の文では、correlatedは統計上の主張です。Relatedは同義語ではありません。
UNC Sciences(公式の対)
精確:
population density is positively correlated with disease transmission rate
精度が低い:
population density is positively related to disease transmission rate
日常語の誤りも、明確さの失敗です。UNC Word Choiceの対は公式です。両行とも英語のままにしてください。
UNC Writing Center、「Word Choice」— 誤用と望まない含意
誤用:
Cree Indians were a monotonous culture until French and British settlers arrived.
改稿:
Cree Indians were a homogenous culture.
望まない含意:
I sprayed the ants in their private places.
改稿:
I sprayed the ants in their hiding places.
学識があるように聞こえるための隠語は、分野の要件ではなく明確さの失敗です。UNCの Word Choice ハンドアウトが対を示します。
UNC Writing Center、「Word Choice」
隠語:
The dialectical interface between neo-Platonists and anti-disestablishment Catholics offers an algorithm for deontological thought.
改稿:
The dialogue between neo-Platonists and certain Catholic thinkers is a model for deontological thought.
書き手が定義しない荷電した語は、論文規模での同じ問題です。UNCの Word Choice の対は、説明なしに働くsocietyを止めます。
UNC Writing Center、「Word Choice」— 荷電した言い回し
荷電:
Society teaches young girls that beauty is their most important quality. In order to prevent eating disorders and other health problems, we must change society.
名指し:
Contemporary American popular media, like magazines and movies, teach young girls that beauty is their most important quality. In order to prevent eating disorders and other health problems, we must change the images and role models girls are offered.
強調を足す前に冗長さを削る
APA §4.5は敵を名指しします。冗長さ、重複、回避、遠回し、不器用な散文です。UNCの Word Choice 表は、その規則の学生向け版です。これらの置換はUNCのものであり、私たちのものではありません。
| 冗長 | 簡潔 |
|---|---|
| I came to the realization that | I realized that |
| She is of the opinion that | She thinks that |
| Concerning the matter of | About |
| During the course of | During |
| In the event that | If |
| In the process of | During, while |
| Regardless of the fact that | Although |
| Due to the fact that | Because |
| In all cases | Always |
| At that point in time | Then |
| Prior to | Before |
科学ハンドアウトは、情報を足さない書き出しを三つ挙げます。「the fact that」「it should be noted that」「it is interesting that」。削除してください。残った節を残す価値がなければ、その文はそもそも不要です。
UNCのStyleハンドアウトは、Word Choiceが表にしない冗長さの癖を三つ加えます。主張の代わりに立つ決まり文句、限定語の積み重ね、重複する対です。これらはUNCの公式例です。
UNC Writing Center、「Style」— 決まり文句、限定語、重複する対
決まり文句:
France bit off more than it could chew in Vietnam, and America’s intervention was too little, too late.
改稿:
As the French faltered in Vietnam, even American intervention could not save the collapsing regime.
限定語の積み重ね:
Most people usually think that many puppies are generally pretty cute.
改稿:
Most people think that puppies are cute.
重複する対:
Adrienne fulfilled all our hopes and dreams when she saved the whole entire planet.
改稿:
Adrienne fulfilled all our hopes when she saved the planet.
ヘッジは、APA §4.5が削れと言う回避です。慎重な動詞一つは学術です。「might / possible / perhaps / some」の積み重ねは、主張から隠れる書き手です。
Gopen and Swan(1990)
Readers expect a grammatical subject to be followed immediately by the verb.
Anything of length that intervenes between subject and verb is read as an interruption, and therefore as something of lesser importance.
Turabian, Student’s Guide to Writing College Papers, 第5版, p. 148(CMOSトピックシート)
Make subjects short and concrete, ideally naming the character that performs the action expressed by the verb that follows.
Avoid interrupting the subject and verb with more than a word or two.
Put key actions in verbs, not in nouns.
Put information familiar to readers at the beginning of a sentence, new information at the end.
Avoid long introductory phrases: get to a short, familiar subject quickly.
GopenとSwanの最初の作業例は、公表されたミトコンドリア遺伝学の文です。文法上の主語(The smallest)は動詞(has been identified)から23語離れています。彼らは原文、二つの試行改稿、実際に選んだ段落を印刷します。科学は残り、割り込みは残りません。各行は英語のままにしてください。
Gopen and Swan — 公表された最初の文と彼らの改稿
公表された原文:
The smallest of the URF's (URFA6L), a 207-nucleotide (nt) reading frame overlapping out of phase the NH2-terminal portion of the adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) subunit 6 gene has been identified as the animal equivalent of the recently discovered yeast H+-ATPase subunit 8 gene.
207-ntの定義が重要なら試行改稿:
The smallest of the URF's is URFA6L, a 207-nucleotide (nt) reading frame overlapping out of phase the NH2-terminal portion of the adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) subunit 6 gene; it has been identified as the animal equivalent of the recently discovered yeast H+-ATPase subunit 8 gene.
その定義が余談なら試行改稿:
The smallest of the URF's (URFA6L) has been identified as the animal equivalent of the recently discovered yeast H+-ATPase subunit 8 gene.
彼らが落ち着いた段落(冒頭):
The smallest of the URF's, URFA6L, has been identified as the animal equivalent of the recently discovered yeast H+-ATPase subunit 8 gene; but the functional significance of other URF's has been more elusive.
UNC Sciencesは、方法の文に同じ診断を下します。主語(the osmoregulatory organ)と行為(activates / expels)が離れすぎ、三つの動詞が同じ仕事を言っていました。
UNC Sciences(公式の対)
複雑:
The osmoregulatory organ, which is located at the base of the third dorsal spine on the outer margin of the terminal papillae and functions by expelling excess sodium ions, activates only under hypertonic conditions.
より明確:
Located on the outer margin of the terminal papillae at the base of the third dorsal spine, the osmoregulatory organ expels excess sodium ions under hypertonic conditions.
前置詞句の長い連なりも、同じ構造の問題です。UNC Sciencesは、Michael Alleyの1996年The Craft of Scientific Writingを「やってはいけない」例として引用します。一文に前置詞が11個あります。
UNC SciencesによるAlley(1996)の引用
...to confirm the nature of electrical breakdown of nitrogen in uniform fields at relatively high pressures and interelectrode gaps that approach those obtained in engineering practice, prior to the determination of the processes that set the criterion for breakdown in the above-mentioned gases and mixtures in uniform and non-uniform fields of engineering significance.
UNC StyleのGilligan文は、その積み重ねの学生向け版です。前置詞を丸で囲み、「誰が誰に何をしたか」と問います。
UNC Writing Center、「Style」— 前置詞の積み上げ
冗長:
The reason for the failure of the economic system of the island was the inability of Gilligan in finding adequate resources without incurring expenses at the hands of the headhunters on the other side of the island.
改稿:
Gilligan hurt the economic system of the island because he couldn’t find adequate resources without angering the headhunters.
誤った名詞に付く修飾語も、同じ構造の問題です。UNCの Word Choice ハンドアウトはこの対を使います。ぶら下がり修飾であり、語彙の問題ではありません。
UNC Writing Center、「Word Choice」
不明確:
Having finished with studying, the pizza was quickly eaten.
明確:
Having finished with studying, the students quickly ate the pizza.
既知の情報を先に、新しい情報を後に置く
GopenとSwanは、文頭をトピック位置、文末をストレス位置と呼びます。Turabianの第四原則は、学生向けの同じ規則です。これは二番目の態の論考ではありません。ミツバチと花粉の対は、文が誰の話をしているかです。
Gopen and Swan(1990)— トピック位置
“Bees disperse pollen” and “Pollen is dispersed by bees” are two different but equally respectable sentences about the same facts. The first tells us something about bees; the second tells us something about pollen.
A sentence is too long when it has more viable candidates for stress positions than there are stress positions available.
彼らは論考を七つの構造原則で閉じます。読みやすさ公式の語数制限は一つもありません。
Gopen and Swan(1990)— 七つの原則
Follow a grammatical subject as soon as possible with its verb.
Place in the stress position the “new information” you want the reader to emphasize.
Place the person or thing whose “story” a sentence is telling at the beginning of the sentence, in the topic position.
Place appropriate “old information” (material already stated in the discourse) in the topic position for linkage backward and contextualization forward.
Articulate the action of every clause or sentence in its verb.
In general, provide context for your reader before asking that reader to consider anything new.
In general, try to ensure that the relative emphases of the substance coincide with the relative expectations for emphasis raised by the structure.
行為を動詞に置く
Turabianの第三原則「Put key actions in verbs, not in nouns」が名詞化の規則です。GopenとSwanは「Articulate the action of every clause or sentence in its verb」と言います。UNC Styleの公式の対は、動詞を名詞に隠し、それから戻します。
UNC Writing Center、「Style」— 名詞化と空の書き出し
名詞が重い:
The discovery of the aliens was made by the government.
動詞を先に:
The government discovered the aliens.
空の書き出し:
There is a need for further study of aliens.
改稿:
We need to study aliens further.
弱い動詞:
The aliens have a positive effect on our ecosystem.
強い動詞:
The aliens improve our ecosystem.
APA §4.3は同じ理由で名詞の連なりを警告します。early childhood language intervention program evaluation protocolは、読者に積み重ねをほどかせます。分けてください。a protocol for evaluating an early-childhood language-intervention program。このほどきは形のテンプレートであり、実在のプロトコルについての主張ではありません。
隠語と略語は初出で定義する
APA §4.9は隠語を使うなと言い、APA §§6.24–6.31は落とせない略語の扱いを示します。Natureの著者ページは職業科学者向けに書かれていますが、説明のない頭字語はやはり拒みます。
APA Style学生論文チェックリスト、略語(Publication Manual §§6.24–6.31)
Use abbreviations sparingly and usually when they are familiar to readers, save considerable space, and appear at least three times in the paper.
Define abbreviations, including abbreviations for group authors, on first use.
APA Style学生論文チェックリスト、イタリック(Publication Manual §§6.22–6.23)
Use italics for the first use of key terms or phrases accompanied by a definition.
Nature Portfolio、「How to write your paper」
Keep technical terms to the places where they are needed. Define abbreviations at first use and use them sparingly.
Write clear and direct sentences. Using the active voice (‘we performed the experiment...’) typically helps readers better understand concepts and results described in a paper.
State the main finding clearly. A reader should be able to understand what you found and why it matters from the title and abstract.
Ask a colleague outside your immediate field to read the title and abstract.
UNC Sciences(公式の対)
質的:
development rate was fastest in the higher temperature treatment
量的:
development rate in the 30°C temperature treatment was ten percent faster than development rate in the 20°C temperature treatment
比喩的:
experimental subjects were assaulted with a wall of sound
特定:
experimental subjects were presented with 20 second pulses of conspecific mating calls
論理的比較は、両方の項目を紙面に置く必要があります。APA §4.10は「more than」と「compared with」の背後にある規則です。
(Publication Manual §§4.16–4.21)
Use first person pronouns to describe your work and your personal reactions (e.g., “I examined,” “I agreed with”), including your work with coauthors (e.g., “We conducted”).
その判断、Iとweを含む判断は、能動態対受動態に置きます。このページを二番目の態の論考にしないでください。
リストを並列にし、代名詞を指す
APA §§6.49–6.52は、リストの項目が並列であることを求めます。チェックリストの一行の言い直しは公式です。
APA Style学生論文チェックリスト、リスト(Publication Manual §§6.49–6.52)
Ensure items in lists are parallel.
混在したリストは、各項目が文法的でも明確さの問題です。テンプレートの形です。
並列リストのテンプレート(APA §§6.49–6.52の形)
並列でない:
この研究は、学生の動機づけ、彼らが学業でどう成果を出したか、および彼らの満足を検討した。
並列:
この研究は、学生の動機づけ、学業成績、および満足を検討した。
UNCの Word Choice ハンドアウトは、不明確な代名詞を語彙選択の失敗として扱います。彼らの例は公式の対です。
UNC Writing Center、「Word Choice」
不明確なhe / him:
My cousin Jake hugged my brother Trey, even though he didn’t like him very much.
名指し:
My cousin Jake hugged my brother Trey, even though Jake doesn’t like Trey very much.
論題に重要用語を担わせる
文レベルの明確さは主張から始まります。UNCは、実際の課題テキストであるMark TwainのAdventures of Huckleberry Finnについて、三つの論題草稿を歩きます。第3版が強いのは、語彙が凝ったからではなく、重要用語が名指しされているからです。
UNC Writing Center、「Word Choice」— Huckleberry Finnの論題
第1版(曖昧):
There are many important river and shore scenes in Huckleberry Finn.
第2版(行き先がより明確):
The contrasting river and shore scenes in Huckleberry Finn suggest a return to nature.
第3版(主張に重要用語):
Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature.
|---|---|
| 追加 | also, and, furthermore |
| 対比 | but, however, in contrast |
| 結果 | so, therefore, as a result |
| 例示 | for example, for instance, specifically |
| 順序 | first, then, finally |
UNC Writing Center、「Reorganizing Drafts」
A “reverse” outline is one you make after you have written a draft.
The reverse outline will help you evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of both your organization and your argument.
明確さのチェックリスト(APA §4 + Turabian + UNC + Gopen and Swan)
- 主語と動詞が一語か二語以内にある
- 行為は動詞であり、-tionで終わる名詞ではない
- 既知の情報は文頭、新しい主張は文末
- 文は一つの話(トピック位置)をし、一つの新しい点を強調する
- すべての略語と重要用語が初出で定義されている
- 精度が残るところでは、凝った語を日常語に置き換えた
- 比較は両方を名指しし、数量が「various」と「higher」に代わる
- 研究と理論は、収集も結論も信じもしない
- リストは並列。すべてのthey / this / itは名詞一つを指す

- APA §§4.16–4.17は、自分の行為には「the researcher」や「this paper」ではなくIまたはwe(「I examined」「We conducted」)を使えと言います。それは態と人称の判断です。能動態対受動態ガイドを使い、このページで行為者を名詞化に隠さないでください。
- APA Styleにおける擬人化とは何か?
- APA §4.11: 無生物やヒト以外の動物に人間の行為を与えない。理論は問いをaddressできるが、concludeはできない。研究はインタビューをcollectできない。研究者を名指しします。公式チェックリストは形容詞を「anthropomorphistic」と綴ります。
- 冗長な学術文を直すには?
- まずUNC Word Choiceの一覧を削除します(「due to the fact that」→「because」、「at that point in time」→「then」)。それからTurabianの三つの点検です。主語は短いか。行為は動詞か。新しい情報は文末か。ヘッジの山が残るなら、慎重な動詞を一つ残します。
- 名詞化とは何か、なぜ明確さを損なうのか?
- 名詞化は、行為を名詞に置いたものです(implementation、improvement、discovery)。Turabian p. 148、GopenとSwan、UNC Styleはみな、その行為を動詞に戻すよう言います。UNCの公式の対は「The discovery of the aliens was made by the government」→「The government discovered the aliens」です。
