학술 논문을 명확하게 쓰는 법

명확한 학술 글쓰기는 짧은 주어를 실제 동사 옆에 두고, 새 정보를 독자가 강조를 기대하는 자리에 둡니다. 이 페이지는 Publication Manual §§4.1–4.11에 대한 APA 7 학생 논문 점검표(최종 갱신 2021년 9월 8일), Turabian의 다섯 문장 원칙(Student’s Guide to Writing College Papers, 제5판, p. 148), Nature Portfolio의 “How to write your paper”, UNC Word Choice, Style, Scientific Writing, Reorganizing Drafts 유인물, Gopen과 Swan의 1990년 American Scientist 에세이 “The Science of Scientific Writing”을 따릅니다.

“it is important to note that” 같은 빈 도입부를 지우십시오. 문제가 동사를 누가 수행하느냐일 때만 태 가이드를, 문장이 실제로 비문법적일 때만 문법 실수를 가리키십시오.

수정 템플릿(자신의 주장을 넣으십시오. 데이터를 지어내지 마십시오)

주어 + 동사를 먼저:

누가 또는 무엇이 무엇을 했다. 그다음 한계, 방법, 예외.

행위를 동사에:

“the implementation of X resulted in Y”가 아니라 “X did Y.”

익숙한 것, 그다음 새로운 것:

문장 앞에 옛 정보. 발견, 수치, 주장은 끝에.

첫 사용에서 용어:

정식 명칭(ABBR), 그다음 ABBR. 바로 정의하는 첫 핵심 용어는 이탤릭(APA §6.22).

꾸미지 말고 지우기:

“the fact that”, “it should be noted that”, “it is interesting that”를 삭제하십시오(UNC Sciences). 남은 절을 유지하십시오.

미국심리학회는 Publication Manual(제7판) 제4장을 학생 논문 점검표에서 다시 말합니다. 유인물 날짜는 © 2021이며 최종 갱신은 2021년 9월 8일입니다. 연속성, 간결성, 명확성은 세 개의 별도 점검표 칸이며, 전문 은어 문장은 칸마다 똑같지 않습니다.

APA Style 학생 논문 점검표, 연속성(Publication Manual §§4.1–4.3)

Check for continuity in words, concepts, and thematic development across the paper. Explain relationships between ideas clearly. Present ideas in a logical order. Use clear transitions to smoothly connect sentences, paragraphs, and ideas.

APA Style 학생 논문 점검표, 간결성(Publication Manual §§4.4–4.6)

Choose words and phrases carefully and deliberately. Eliminate wordiness, redundancy, evasiveness, circumlocution, overuse of the passive voice, and clumsy prose.
Do not use jargon, contractions, or colloquialisms.
Avoid overusing both short, simple sentences and long, involved sentences; instead, use varied sentence lengths.
Avoid both single-sentence paragraphs and paragraphs longer than one double-spaced page.

APA Style 학생 논문 점검표, 명확성(Publication Manual §§4.7–4.11)

Use clear and precise language. Use a professional tone and professional language.
Do not use jargon, contractions, colloquialisms, or creative literary devices.
Check for anthropomorphistic language (i.e., attributing human actions to inanimate objects or nonhuman animals).
Make logical comparisons using clear word choice and sentence structure.

Gopen and Swan, “The Science of Scientific Writing” (1990)

We argue here that complexity of thought need not lead to impenetrability of expression.
The fundamental purpose of scientific discourse is not the mere presentation of information and thought, but rather its actual communication.
It does not matter how pleased an author might be to have converted all the right data into sentences and paragraphs; it matters only whether a large majority of the reading audience accurately perceives what the author had in mind.

UNC의 Word Choice와 Style 유인물은 “똑똑해 보이려는” 학생에게 같은 말을 합니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Word Choice”

But the most important goal of academic writing is not to sound smart—it is to communicate an argument or information clearly and convincingly.
Using simple words does not indicate simple thoughts.
In an academic argument paper, what makes the thesis and argument sophisticated are the connections presented in simple, clear language.

UNC Writing Center, “Style”

First, remember that your goal in academic writing is not to sound intelligent, but to get your intelligent point across.

정확한 일상어를 고르십시오

APA §§4.4–4.9와 UNC 모두 군더더기를 거부합니다. 과학 글쓰기 유인물은 학생이 놓치는 정밀도 문을 더합니다. 익숙한 단어를 고르는 것은 그것이 기술적 구별을 버리지 않을 때만입니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Scientific Writing”

When given a choice between a familiar and a technical or obscure term, the more familiar term is preferable if it doesn’t reduce precision.
UNC Sciences 대체어(같은 정밀도일 때 오른쪽 단어를 쓰십시오)

UNC 자신의 정밀도 쌍은 화려한 단어가 맞을 때를 보여 줍니다. 방법이나 결과 문장에서 correlated는 통계적 주장입니다. Related는 동의어가 아닙니다.

UNC Sciences(공식 쌍)

정확:

population density is positively correlated with disease transmission rate

덜 정확:

population density is positively related to disease transmission rate

잘못된 일상어도 명확성 실패입니다. UNC Word Choice의 쌍은 공식입니다. 두 줄 모두 영어로 두십시오.

UNC Writing Center, “Word Choice” — 오용된 단어와 원치 않는 함의

오용된 단어:

Cree Indians were a monotonous culture until French and British settlers arrived.

수정:

Cree Indians were a homogenous culture.

원치 않는 함의:

I sprayed the ants in their private places.

수정:

I sprayed the ants in their hiding places.

학식 있어 보이려고 있는 전문 은어는 분야 요건이 아니라 명확성 실패입니다. UNC Word Choice 유인물이 그 쌍을 줍니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Word Choice”

전문 은어:

The dialectical interface between neo-Platonists and anti-disestablishment Catholics offers an algorithm for deontological thought.

수정:

The dialogue between neo-Platonists and certain Catholic thinkers is a model for deontological thought.

글쓴이가 정의하지 않는 하중 있는 단어는 논문 규모에서 같은 문제입니다. UNC Word Choice 쌍은 설명 없이 일하는 society를 막습니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Word Choice” — 하중 있는 언어

하중 있음:

Society teaches young girls that beauty is their most important quality. In order to prevent eating disorders and other health problems, we must change society.

이름 붙임:

Contemporary American popular media, like magazines and movies, teach young girls that beauty is their most important quality. In order to prevent eating disorders and other health problems, we must change the images and role models girls are offered.

강조를 더하기 전에 장황함을 지우십시오

APA §4.5는 적을 이름 붙입니다. 장황함, 중복, 회피, 우회, 서툰 산문입니다. UNC의 Word Choice 표는 그 규칙의 학생용 판입니다. 이 치환은 UNC의 것이지 우리의 것이 아닙니다.

과학 유인물은 정보를 더하지 않는 도입부 셋을 더합니다. “the fact that”, “it should be noted that”, “it is interesting that”. 지우십시오. 남은 절을 유지할 가치가 없다면 그 문장은 애초에 없어야 합니다.

UNC의 Style 유인물은 Word Choice가 표로 만들지 않은 장황함 습관 셋을 더합니다. 주장을 대신하는 진부한 표현, 한정어 더미, 중복 쌍입니다. 이것들은 UNC의 공식 예입니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Style” — 진부한 표현, 한정어, 중복 쌍

진부한 표현:

France bit off more than it could chew in Vietnam, and America’s intervention was too little, too late.

수정:

As the French faltered in Vietnam, even American intervention could not save the collapsing regime.

한정어 더미:

Most people usually think that many puppies are generally pretty cute.

수정:

Most people think that puppies are cute.

중복 쌍:

Adrienne fulfilled all our hopes and dreams when she saved the whole entire planet.

수정:

Adrienne fulfilled all our hopes when she saved the planet.

헤징은 APA §4.5가 지우라고 하는 회피입니다. 신중한 동사 하나는 학문입니다. “might / possible / perhaps / some” 더미는 주장에서 숨는 글쓴이입니다.

Gopen and Swan (1990)

Readers expect a grammatical subject to be followed immediately by the verb.
Anything of length that intervenes between subject and verb is read as an interruption, and therefore as something of lesser importance.

Turabian, Student’s Guide to Writing College Papers, 제5판, p. 148 (CMOS 주제 시트)

Make subjects short and concrete, ideally naming the character that performs the action expressed by the verb that follows.
Avoid interrupting the subject and verb with more than a word or two.
Put key actions in verbs, not in nouns.
Put information familiar to readers at the beginning of a sentence, new information at the end.
Avoid long introductory phrases: get to a short, familiar subject quickly.

Gopen과 Swan의 첫 작업 사례는 공개된 미토콘드리아 유전학 문장입니다. 문법적 주어(The smallest)는 동사(has been identified)에서 23단어 떨어져 있습니다. 그들은 원문, 두 번의 시험 수정, 실제로 고른 단락을 인쇄합니다. 과학은 남고 개입은 남지 않습니다. 모든 줄을 영어로 두십시오.

Gopen and Swan — 공개된 첫 문장과 그들의 수정

공개된 원문:

The smallest of the URF's (URFA6L), a 207-nucleotide (nt) reading frame overlapping out of phase the NH2-terminal portion of the adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) subunit 6 gene has been identified as the animal equivalent of the recently discovered yeast H+-ATPase subunit 8 gene.

207-nt 정의가 중요할 때의 시험 수정:

The smallest of the URF's is URFA6L, a 207-nucleotide (nt) reading frame overlapping out of phase the NH2-terminal portion of the adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) subunit 6 gene; it has been identified as the animal equivalent of the recently discovered yeast H+-ATPase subunit 8 gene.

그 정의가 곁가지일 때의 시험 수정:

The smallest of the URF's (URFA6L) has been identified as the animal equivalent of the recently discovered yeast H+-ATPase subunit 8 gene.

그들이 정착한 단락(첫머리):

The smallest of the URF's, URFA6L, has been identified as the animal equivalent of the recently discovered yeast H+-ATPase subunit 8 gene; but the functional significance of other URF's has been more elusive.

UNC Sciences는 방법 문장에 같은 진단을 내립니다. 주어(the osmoregulatory organ)와 행위(activates / expels)가 너무 멀었고, 세 동사가 같은 일을 말했습니다.

UNC Sciences(공식 쌍)

복잡:

The osmoregulatory organ, which is located at the base of the third dorsal spine on the outer margin of the terminal papillae and functions by expelling excess sodium ions, activates only under hypertonic conditions.

더 명확:

Located on the outer margin of the terminal papillae at the base of the third dorsal spine, the osmoregulatory organ expels excess sodium ions under hypertonic conditions.

전치사구의 긴 줄도 같은 구조 문제입니다. UNC Sciences는 Michael Alley의 1996년 The Craft of Scientific Writing을 “하지 말 것” 사례로 인용합니다. 한 문장에 전치사가 열한 개입니다.

UNC Sciences가 인용한 Alley (1996)

...to confirm the nature of electrical breakdown of nitrogen in uniform fields at relatively high pressures and interelectrode gaps that approach those obtained in engineering practice, prior to the determination of the processes that set the criterion for breakdown in the above-mentioned gases and mixtures in uniform and non-uniform fields of engineering significance.

UNC Style의 Gilligan 문장은 그 더미의 학생용 판입니다. 전치사를 동그라미 친 뒤 “누가 누구에게 무엇을 했는가?”를 물으십시오.

UNC Writing Center, “Style” — 전치사 더미

장황:

The reason for the failure of the economic system of the island was the inability of Gilligan in finding adequate resources without incurring expenses at the hands of the headhunters on the other side of the island.

수정:

Gilligan hurt the economic system of the island because he couldn’t find adequate resources without angering the headhunters.

잘못된 명사에 붙는 수식어도 같은 구조 문제입니다. UNC Word Choice 유인물은 이 쌍을 씁니다. 매달린 수식어이지 어휘 문제가 아닙니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Word Choice”

불명확:

Having finished with studying, the pizza was quickly eaten.

명확:

Having finished with studying, the students quickly ate the pizza.

익숙한 정보를 앞에, 새 정보를 뒤에 두십시오

Gopen과 Swan은 문장 앞을 주제 위치, 끝을 강조 위치라고 부릅니다. Turabian의 넷째 원칙은 학생 언어로 된 같은 규칙입니다. 이것은 두 번째 태 에세이가 아닙니다. 벌/꽃가루 쌍은 문장이 누구의 이야기를 하는가에 관한 것입니다.

Gopen and Swan (1990) — 주제 위치

“Bees disperse pollen” and “Pollen is dispersed by bees” are two different but equally respectable sentences about the same facts. The first tells us something about bees; the second tells us something about pollen.
A sentence is too long when it has more viable candidates for stress positions than there are stress positions available.

그들은 에세이를 일곱 구조 원칙으로 닫습니다. 그중 어느 것도 가독성 공식의 단어 제한이 아닙니다.

Gopen and Swan (1990) — 일곱 원칙

Follow a grammatical subject as soon as possible with its verb.
Place in the stress position the “new information” you want the reader to emphasize.
Place the person or thing whose “story” a sentence is telling at the beginning of the sentence, in the topic position.
Place appropriate “old information” (material already stated in the discourse) in the topic position for linkage backward and contextualization forward.
Articulate the action of every clause or sentence in its verb.
In general, provide context for your reader before asking that reader to consider anything new.
In general, try to ensure that the relative emphases of the substance coincide with the relative expectations for emphasis raised by the structure.

행위를 동사에 두십시오

Turabian의 셋째 원칙 — “Put key actions in verbs, not in nouns” — 이 명사화 규칙입니다. Gopen과 Swan은 “Articulate the action of every clause or sentence in its verb”로 말합니다. UNC Style의 공식 쌍은 동사를 명사에 숨긴 뒤 되돌립니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Style” — 명사화와 빈 도입부

명사 과다:

The discovery of the aliens was made by the government.

동사 먼저:

The government discovered the aliens.

빈 도입부:

There is a need for further study of aliens.

수정:

We need to study aliens further.

약한 동사:

The aliens have a positive effect on our ecosystem.

더 강한 동사:

The aliens improve our ecosystem.

APA §4.3는 같은 이유로 명사 연쇄를 경고합니다. early childhood language intervention program evaluation protocol은 독자에게 더미를 풀게 합니다. 나누십시오. a protocol for evaluating an early-childhood language-intervention program.

(Publication Manual §§6.24–6.31)

Use abbreviations sparingly and usually when they are familiar to readers, save considerable space, and appear at least three times in the paper.
Define abbreviations, including abbreviations for group authors, on first use.

APA Style 학생 논문 점검표, 이탤릭(Publication Manual §§6.22–6.23)

Use italics for the first use of key terms or phrases accompanied by a definition.

Nature Portfolio, “How to write your paper”

Keep technical terms to the places where they are needed. Define abbreviations at first use and use them sparingly.
Write clear and direct sentences. Using the active voice (‘we performed the experiment...’) typically helps readers better understand concepts and results described in a paper.
State the main finding clearly. A reader should be able to understand what you found and why it matters from the title and abstract.
Ask a colleague outside your immediate field to read the title and abstract.

UNC Sciences(공식 쌍)

질적:

development rate was fastest in the higher temperature treatment

양적:

development rate in the 30°C temperature treatment was ten percent faster than development rate in the 20°C temperature treatment

비유적:

experimental subjects were assaulted with a wall of sound

구체화:

experimental subjects were presented with 20 second pulses of conspecific mating calls

논리적 비교는 두 항목을 모두 페이지에 둡니다. APA §4.10은 “more than”과 “compared with” 뒤의 규칙입니다.

(Publication Manual §§4.16–4.21)

Use first person pronouns to describe your work and your personal reactions (e.g., “I examined,” “I agreed with”), including your work with coauthors (e.g., “We conducted”).

그 결정, I와 we를 포함한 결정은 능동태 대 수동태에 있습니다. 이 페이지를 두 번째 태 에세이로 만들지 마십시오.

목록을 병렬로, 대명사를 가리키게 하십시오

APA §§6.49–6.52는 목록 항목이 병렬이어야 한다고 요구합니다. 점검표의 한 줄 재진술은 공식입니다.

APA Style 학생 논문 점검표, 목록(Publication Manual §§6.49–6.52)

Ensure items in lists are parallel.

섞인 목록은 모든 항목이 문법적이어도 명확성 문제입니다. 템플릿 형태입니다.

병렬 목록 템플릿(APA §§6.49–6.52 형태)

병렬 아님:

이 연구는 학생 동기, 그들이 학업에서 어떻게 수행했는지, 그리고 그들의 만족을 검토했다.

병렬:

이 연구는 학생 동기, 학업 수행, 만족을 검토했다.

UNC Word Choice 유인물은 불명확한 대명사를 어휘 선택 실패로 다룹니다. 그들의 예는 공식 쌍입니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Word Choice”

불명확한 he / him:

My cousin Jake hugged my brother Trey, even though he didn’t like him very much.

이름 붙임:

My cousin Jake hugged my brother Trey, even though Jake doesn’t like Trey very much.

논지가 핵심 용어를 나르게 하십시오

문장 수준 명확성은 주장에서 시작합니다. UNC는 실제 과제 텍스트인 Mark Twain의 Adventures of Huckleberry Finn에 대해 세 논지 초고를 걷습니다. 3판이 더 강한 이유는 어휘가 화려해서가 아니라 핵심 용어가 이름 붙여졌기 때문입니다.

UNC Writing Center, “Word Choice” — Huckleberry Finn 논지

1판(모호):

There are many important river and shore scenes in Huckleberry Finn.

2판(목적지가 더 명확):

The contrasting river and shore scenes in Huckleberry Finn suggest a return to nature.

3판(주장에 핵심 용어):

Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature.

추가also, and, furthermore
대조but, however, in contrast
결과so, therefore, as a result
예시for example, for instance, specifically

UNC Writing Center, “Reorganizing Drafts”

A “reverse” outline is one you make after you have written a draft.
The reverse outline will help you evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of both your organization and your argument.

명확성 점검표(APA §4 + Turabian + UNC + Gopen and Swan)

모든 they / this / it은 명사 하나를 가리킨다

APA §§4.16–4.17은 자신의 행위에 “the researcher”나 “this paper” 대신 I 또는 we(“I examined”, “We conducted”)를 쓰라고 합니다. 그것은 태와 인칭 결정입니다. 능동태 대 수동태 가이드를 쓰십시오. 이 페이지에서 행위자를 명사화에 숨기지 마십시오.
APA Style에서 의인화란 무엇인가?
APA §4.11: 무생물이나 인간이 아닌 동물에 인간의 행위를 주지 마십시오. 이론은 질문을 address할 수 있지만 conclude할 수는 없습니다. 연구는 인터뷰를 collect할 수 없습니다. 연구자를 이름 붙이십시오. 공식 점검표는 형용사를 “anthropomorphistic”으로 씁니다.
장황한 학술 문장을 고치려면?
먼저 UNC Word Choice 목록을 지우십시오(“due to the fact that” → “because”, “at that point in time” → “then”). 그다음 Turabian의 세 점검을 물으십시오. 주어가 짧은가? 행위가 동사인가? 새 정보가 끝에 있는가? 헤지 더미가 남으면 신중한 동사 하나를 남기십시오.
명사화란 무엇이며 왜 명확성을 해치는가?
명사화는 행위를 명사에 주차한 것입니다(implementation, improvement, discovery). Turabian p. 148, Gopen과 Swan, UNC Style은 모두 그 행위를 동사로 되돌리라고 합니다. UNC의 공식 쌍은 “The discovery of the aliens was made by the government” → “The government discovered the aliens”입니다.
Gopen과 Swan: 첫 단어는 문장이 누구의 이야기인지를 독자에게 알립니다(“Bees disperse pollen”은 벌에 관한 것이고, “Pollen is dispersed by bees”는 꽃가루에 관한 것입니다).
