Grading Scales Vary — Check Yours

There is no universal GPA scale. Most U.S. colleges count an A as 4.0, but some give an A+ 4.3, some do not use pluses and minuses at all, and high schools often weight honors and AP courses on a 5.0 scale. Grade boundaries differ too: a 90 is an A− at one school and an A at another. The GPA calculators use the common U.S. scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on), and the Letter Grade Calculator accepts a custom scale. Compare the results with your school's published policy before you rely on them.

Conversions between countries are the least standard of all. A percentage-to-GPA table, a German grade from a foreign GPA, or a UK degree class from module marks each depends on rules the receiving institution sets. Use the converters to estimate, and use the official conversion when an application asks for one. Your registrar's figure, or the evaluation service the institution names, is the one that counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add the results, and divide by the total credit hours. A 3-credit A (4.0) and a 4-credit B (3.0) give (12 + 12) ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43. Courses with more credits count for more.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses the same 4.0 scale for every course. A weighted GPA adds points for harder courses — often one point for AP and IB and half a point for Honors — so an A in an AP class can count as 5.0. Colleges may recalculate your GPA their own way.
How do I work out what I need on my final exam?
You need your current grade, the grade you want, and the final's weight. Required score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With a current 85%, a target of 90% and a final worth 25%, you need (90 − 85 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 105%. The Final Grade Calculator does this and tells you when a target needs more than 100%.
What is an SAT superscore?
A superscore takes your highest Reading and Writing score and your highest Math score across all the dates you sat the test, and adds them. Colleges that superscore use it instead of your best single sitting. Policies differ by college, so check each one; the SAT Superscore Calculator shows both figures.
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Average the four section bands — listening, reading, writing and speaking — and round to the nearest half band, with an average ending in .25 rounding up to the next half band and .75 up to the next whole band. Bands of 6.5, 7, 6 and 6.5 average 6.5. The IELTS Band Score Calculator applies the official rule.
Can I convert my GPA to a percentage exactly?
Not exactly — there is no single official formula, and different universities and countries use different tables. The GPA to Percentage Converter shows the common conversions; if an application asks for a percentage, use the method your institution or the application specifies. The calculators run in your browser and do not send your grades to a server.
