IELTS says TOEFL iBT scores from January 2026 should not be assumed to be directly comparable with its published table, so any 1–6 band here is an indirect estimate.

How to Use the English Test Score Converter
- 1. Choose your test. Select the test your score comes from. For TOEFL iBT, choose the 0–120 total if your test was taken before 21 January 2026 and the 1–6 band if your report uses the new scale.
- 2. Enter the overall score. The hint under the box shows the scale. Section scores are not converted here; a mismatch in one skill can matter to an institution even when overall scores line up.
- 3. Read the matching IELTS band. The score is placed on the published IELTS Academic band, or on two bands where a TOEFL 1–6 band straddles a boundary.
- 4. Compare the other tests. The table lists the comparable figure on every other test, and says plainly when a provider has not published one.
Where the Numbers Come From
No single organisation owns a master table, so the converter combines four published sources and keeps them separate. Nothing is interpolated or averaged between tables.
- IELTS publishes comparison tables against TOEFL iBT (tests taken before January 2026), PTE Academic and the Cambridge English Scale, on its comparison page for organisations. The Cambridge scale is listed only for IELTS 5.0 to 7.5.
- Pearson lists the lowest PTE Academic score that meets each IELTS band, updated after research published in July 2025 (PTE Academic score comparison).
- ETS introduced a 1–6 TOEFL iBT scale for reports issued from 21 January 2026 and published how each band relates to the old 0–120 totals (ETS, Understand your scores).
- Duolingo compares the Duolingo English Test with IELTS Academic in its research report DRR-24-05, dated 24 October 2025.
A Note on the New TOEFL Scale
ETS now reports TOEFL iBT section and total scores from 1 to 6 in half-band steps, and the total is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band. For two years after January 2026 reports also carry a comparable 0–120 score. IELTS states that its own TOEFL comparison applies only to tests taken before January 2026 and that later scores should not be assumed to be directly comparable.
The converter therefore does what ETS's table allows and no more. A 1–6 band is turned into the 0–120 totals ETS says it covers, and those totals are then placed on the IELTS table. Treat any figure that passes through the 1–6 scale as an indirect estimate.

What Was Left Out
Duolingo also publishes a comparison with TOEFL iBT, but only as an image on its scores page, so it could not be transcribed reliably and is not included. Duolingo says the existing comparison remains its recommended reference while the TOEFL scale changes. There is also no Cambridge figure below IELTS 5.0 or above 7.5, and no PTE point equivalent below 5.0, because those rows are not in the sources.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is IELTS 6.5 in TOEFL?
- IELTS's comparison table puts IELTS 6.5 at a TOEFL iBT total of 81–90 on the 0–120 scale, for tests taken before January 2026. On ETS's new 1–6 scale those totals fall in bands 4 and 4.5. Because IELTS does not treat post-2026 TOEFL scores as directly comparable, check what the institution itself accepts.
- How do I convert the new TOEFL 1–6 score to the old 0–120 score?
- Use ETS's concordance: band 4.5 covers totals of 86–94, band 5 covers 95–106 and band 6 covers 114–120, for example. ETS also reports a comparable 0–120 score alongside the 1–6 score for two years from January 2026, so your report may already show it.
- What Duolingo English Test score equals IELTS 7?
- Duolingo's concordance with IELTS Academic places Duolingo scores of 130 and 135 at IELTS 7.0, and 120 and 125 at IELTS 6.5. The table lists scores in steps of five and covers overall scores only.
- Why do the two PTE columns give different numbers?
- IELTS lists a point equivalent, such as PTE 58.5 for IELTS 6.5, from a comparison study. Pearson lists the lowest PTE score that meets a band, which is 55 for IELTS 6.5. A candidate with a 56 clears Pearson's minimum but sits below IELTS's equivalent point.
- Will a university accept a converted score?
- Not automatically. Each institution decides which tests it accepts and what score counts, and the conversion tables only show how the tests relate. Check the admissions page for the exact requirement, including any per-skill minimums.
- Does this convert section scores such as speaking or writing?
- No. It converts overall scores only. IELTS recommends comparing the four skill columns when making decisions, because two candidates with the same overall score can have very different skill profiles.
