How to Use the GRE Percentile Calculator
- 1. Enter your scores. Type any of the three measures: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning from 130 to 170 in one-point steps, and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6 in half-point steps.
- 2. Read each percentile rank. The calculator shows the percent of test takers who scored lower than you, and the share who scored at or above.
- 3. Work backward if you like. Enter a percentile from 1 to 99 to see the lowest score on each measure that reaches it.
- 4. Check the table. The full ETS table is below the calculator, so you can read neighbouring scores.
What a GRE Percentile Rank Means
ETS defines a percentile rank as the percent of test takers in the reference group who scored lower than a given score. A Verbal score of 160 has a percentile rank of 82, so 82 percent of test takers scored below 160 and about 18 percent scored 160 or higher. It is a ranking against other test takers, not a measure of how many questions you got right.
The ranks here come from ETS's GRE General Test Interpretive Data (Tables 1A, 1B and 1C), which covers everyone who tested between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2025: 788,021 people on Verbal Reasoning, 790,864 on Quantitative Reasoning and 785,720 on Analytical Writing. Percentile ranks shift when ETS updates the reference group, so a table from another year can give different numbers for the same score.
| Score | Verbal percentile | Quant percentile |
|---|---|---|
| 170 | 99 | 89 |
| 165 | 95 | 67 |
| 160 | 82 | 50 |
| 155 | 64 | 37 |
| 150 | 39 | 23 |
| 145 | 21 | 12 |
Selected rows from ETS Table 1B (tests taken July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2025). Verbal and Quant do not rank the same: the same score sits at a very different percentile on each.
Verbal and Quant Are Not the Same Scale
A 160 is the 82nd percentile in Verbal but the 50th in Quant. In this table the Verbal mean is 151.39 and the Quantitative mean is 157.62, so the Quantitative scores of the reference group are higher on average, and a Quant score needs to be higher to stand out. At the top, a 170 in Quant is at the 89th percentile — no Quant score reaches the 90th percentile in this table — while a 170 in Verbal is at the 99th.
ETS does not publish a percentile rank for the Verbal plus Quant total, so the calculator shows the total (out of 340) without one. Compare each measure on its own.
Worked Example
A test taker scores 160 in Verbal, 165 in Quant and 4.0 in Analytical Writing. The table gives percentile ranks of 82, 67 and 63. The reasoning scores total 325 out of 340. Asked for the 90th percentile, the calculator reports that a Verbal score of 163 is needed, that no Quant score reaches it, and that Analytical Writing needs a 5.0.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What GRE score is the 90th percentile?
- On the ETS table for tests taken July 2022 to June 2025, a Verbal score of 163 is at the 90th percentile. No Quantitative score reaches it: 170 is at the 89th. In Analytical Writing, a 5.0 is at the 93rd percentile and a 4.5 at the 85th.
- What is a good GRE score?
- It depends on the program. Percentile ranks show where you stand among test takers, but admissions committees set their own expectations and look at your whole application. Check the typical scores a program publishes for admitted students, and treat a percentile as context rather than a verdict.
- Why is the same GRE score a different percentile in Verbal and Quant?
- Each measure has its own distribution of scores. In the current ETS reference group the Quantitative mean (157.62) is higher than the Verbal mean (151.39), so a given score is passed by a smaller share of test takers on Verbal and ranks higher there.
- What does percentile rank mean on the GRE?
- It is the percent of test takers in the reference group who scored lower than your score. A rank of 82 means 82 percent scored lower; it does not mean you answered 82 percent of questions correctly.
- Do GRE percentiles change over time?
- Yes. ETS bases percentile ranks on a recent group of test takers, currently those who tested between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2025, and updates them periodically. Use the table that matches the year of your score report if you need to compare, and expect older tables to differ.
- Is there a percentile for the combined Verbal and Quant score?
- ETS publishes percentile ranks for each measure, not for the total of Verbal and Quant, so this calculator shows the total of 260 to 340 without a rank. Graduate programs usually look at the two measures separately.
