Italian Grade Converter

Enter your Italian exam marks and credits to get the weighted average out of 30, a US GPA from one of two published tables or your own cutoffs, and your base degree mark out of 110 — then add the commission's points to see the final voto di laurea. Free, no sign-up.

There is no official Italy-to-US table. These are two published ones that disagree below 24. Use the one your receiving university states.

The US GPA comes from your exam marks, not from the degree mark. A university that reads the /110 mark will usually use its own table.

How to Use the Italian Grade Converter

  1. 1. Choose a US table. Pick the published table your receiving university uses, or choose custom cutoffs and type them. The two published tables differ for marks of 18 to 23.
  2. 2. Enter every exam. Type each mark (a whole number from 18 to 30) and its credits (CFU). Tick '30 e lode' where it applies. A mark below 18 is a fail that must be retaken, so only passed exams go in.
  3. 3. Add the commission's points. Your degree regulation sets how many points the final exam can add. Leave 0 if you only want the base mark. Tick the lode box if the commission awards it.
  4. 4. Read the results. You get the weighted average, the GPA, the share of the maximum, the base degree mark, the final mark out of 110 and its equivalent on the 30-point scale.

How Italian Marks Work

Italian exams are marked out of 30, and 18 is the pass mark. A top result is 30, and an outstanding one is recorded as 30 e lode (cum laude), which counts as 30 in an average. A mark below 18 is a fail and the exam must be retaken. The degree is marked out of 110: 66 is a pass and 110 is the maximum, with 110 e lode awarded only when the commission is unanimous. Both pass marks are exactly 60% of their maximum, since 18 ÷ 30 and 66 ÷ 110 are both 0.6.

How the Degree Mark Is Built

At the University of Bologna's electronic engineering degree, the starting point is the credit-weighted average of your exam marks (idoneità exams are left out, and a 30 e lode counts as 30), rescaled to 110 with × 110 ÷ 30. An average of 27 therefore gives 99/110. The commission then adds points for the final exam — at most 4 on that programme, with a separate speed factor for graduating on time — and the lode needs a unanimous decision. Other universities and programmes set their own bonus points, ranges and rounding, so the points here are an input, and the degree regulation of your course has the last word.

Two Published US Tables

No Italian ministry and no US body publishes one conversion. These are two tables from US universities that evaluate Italian marks. Neither prints plus or minus grades, so the GPA uses A 4, B 3, C 2, D 1 and F 0.

Worked Example

Five exams: 28 (9 credits), 30 e lode (6), 25 (12), 27 (6) and 22 (9), 42 credits in total. The weighted average is 26.00/30 — 86.7% of the maximum — and the base degree mark is 26 × 110 ÷ 30 = 95.33. On the Montana table the GPA is 3.50; on the Washington table, where a 22 is a C, it is 3.29. If the commission adds 4 points, the final mark is 95.33 + 4 = 99.33, which rounds to 99/110.

GPA comes from exams, not the degree mark

A US GPA averages individual course grades, so it is built from the /30 marks. The /110 mark is a separate, final-exam figure that a university may read with its own table. The tool shows the degree mark on the 30-point scale for comparison only.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert Italian grades to a US GPA?
Convert each /30 mark to a letter with a table, then average the grade points weighted by credits. On the University of Washington Graduate School table, 27–30 is an A, 24–26 a B, 21–23 a C and 18–20 a D. On the University of Montana table, 27–30 is an A, 21–26 a B and 18–20 a C. Use the table your receiving university names.
What is 30 e lode in the US system?
It is the top Italian exam result, awarded for an outstanding 30. In an average it counts as 30, and both US tables here put 27 to 30 in the A band, so a lode does not change the GPA. It is worth stating on an application.
What is the minimum pass mark in Italy?
18 out of 30 for an exam and 66 out of 110 for the degree. A mark below 18 is a failed attempt, and the exam has to be retaken.
How is the voto di laurea calculated?
Take the credit-weighted average of your exam marks out of 30, multiply by 110 and divide by 30, then add the points the commission awards for the final exam. At Bologna's electronic engineering degree, 27 becomes 99/110 and the commission adds up to 4 points. Other programmes use different bonuses and rounding.
What does 110 e lode mean?
It is the highest degree result: 110 out of 110 with the lode, which needs a unanimous commission decision. The lodes you earned in single exams do not enter the average; the commission may consider them when deciding whether to award it.
Can I convert my 110 degree mark to a GPA?
Not directly. A GPA is built from individual course grades, so use your exam marks. Dividing 110 by a US scale gives a figure that no university uses, and simple ratios can misrepresent the result, so rely on the exam-by-exam method and keep your transcript.
