UK to US GPA Converter

Convert UK percentage marks or a degree class — First, 2:1, 2:2 or Third — into a US GPA and letter grade using one of three published tables. Because no official conversion exists, you can switch tables and see exactly how much the answer moves. Free, no sign-up.

There is no official UK-to-US conversion. These are three published tables, and the receiving university or evaluator decides which applies.

A class spans a range of marks, so most tables give a range of letters. Use your average mark below for a single figure.

This averages module marks only. Many UK degrees weight the final years more heavily, so for your classification use the degree classification calculator first.

The result is an estimate. US admissions offices and credential evaluators apply their own tables, and many US universities do not convert a degree class at all.

How to Use the UK to US GPA Converter

  1. 1. Pick a published table. The three tables differ in how they treat the middle of the scale, so the choice matters. If you know which one your target university or evaluator uses, pick it.
  2. 2. Look up a degree class. Choose First, 2:1, 2:2 or Third to see the range of US letters and GPA that class covers on the table.
  3. 3. Enter your module marks. Add each module's percentage mark and its credits. The tool converts each mark, then averages the grade points weighted by credits.
  4. 4. Read the result. You get the credit-weighted average mark, the US GPA, the letter and the UK class for that average, with the table behind it.

Why UK and US Grades Don't Line Up

A First needs an average of 70%, which looks like a C if you read it on a US percentage scale, yet all three tables below call it an A. UK and US marking conventions differ, which is why a plain percentage-to-percentage conversion understates UK results. Published conversions instead anchor to the degree class boundaries: 70% for a First, 60% for an upper second (2:1), 50% for a lower second (2:2) and 40% for a Third.

Andrews University, International Student Services, United Kingdom bachelor's classification table (revised September 2022). NC State University Study Abroad, Europe Grade Equivalencies, which calls its table a guide rather than an absolute standard. University of Connecticut, Experiential Global Learning (updated January 2023), the table it publishes for Warwick marks. Grade points on NC State and Connecticut use the common US plus/minus values; Andrews prints its own.

A Degree Class Is a Range

A 2:1 covers marks from 60 to 69, which is a B+ at the bottom and an A− at the top on two of the tables, and a single 3.50 on the third. That is why the class lookup shows a range rather than one figure. If an application form asks for one GPA, use your actual module marks and say which table you used, rather than picking the most favourable end of the range.

Worked Example

Module marks of 72, 68 and 64 (30 credits each), then 52 and 46 (15 credits each), 120 credits in all. The credit-weighted average is 63.25%, an upper second. The GPA is 3.42 on the Andrews table, 3.41 on the NC State table and 3.34 on the Connecticut table. The average itself reads as a B+ on NC State and Connecticut and as A−/B+ on Andrews. The spread comes from the lower marks: the Connecticut table scores a 52 as B− and a 46 as C, where NC State gives B and C+.

Check what the receiving university wants

Many US universities do not convert a UK degree to a GPA at all: they read the class and the transcript. Where a conversion is needed, they or a credential evaluator apply their own table. Use this page to see the range, not to replace their method.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA is a 2:1?
It depends on the table. Andrews University gives an upper second a single 3.50 (A−/B+). NC State maps 65 to 69 to an A− and 60 to 64 to a B+, so a 2:1 spans roughly 3.3 to 3.7 on its table. A figure of around 3.3 to 3.7 is common, but the receiving university decides.
What GPA is a first class degree?
All three tables here give a First, an average of 70% or more, an A, which is 4.0. Admissions offices usually look at the transcript and references as well.
Is a 2:2 a 3.0?
On Andrews University's table, yes: a lower second (50 to 59) is a B, 3.00. NC State also puts 50 to 59 at B, and Connecticut splits it into B (55 to 59) and B− (50 to 54), so a 2:2 can be anywhere from about 2.7 to 3.0.
How do I convert UK percentage marks to GPA?
Convert each module mark to a letter and grade points using a published table, then average the grade points weighted by credits. Do not divide by 100 or use a straight proportion: a 65% is not a US D, and a 70% is not a C.
Why do the tables give different answers?
Each was written for a different purpose and audience. Andrews works from degree classification averages, NC State from study-abroad transcripts, and Connecticut from one UK university's marks. They disagree most between 40 and 55 and at the lowest passing marks.
Will US universities accept this conversion?
Not as an official figure. US admissions offices and credential evaluators use their own methods, and some ask for a formal evaluation. Use this tool to understand the range and to prepare, and quote the university's own conversion when it publishes one.
