Distributions also have two classroom formats, the Dot Plot Maker and Stem-and-Leaf Plot Generator. For functions rather than data, the Graphing Calculator plots up to six at once and finds zeros and intersections.

Figures for Science and Evidence Reviews

Some figures belong to one field and have conventions of their own. Biology: the Phylogenetic Tree Maker draws a Newick tree as a phylogram or cladogram, and the Pedigree Chart Maker uses standard genetics symbols. Geography: the Climate Graph Maker combines monthly temperature and rainfall, and the Population Pyramid Maker compares age structures. Evidence reviews: the Forest Plot Maker plots study estimates with confidence intervals and a summary diamond, and the Risk of Bias Plot Generator draws traffic-light plots from RoB 2 or ROBINS-I judgements.

Download SVG for print and documents — it stays sharp at any size — and PNG for slides, websites and anywhere SVG is not accepted. Label both axes with units, start a bar graph's value axis at zero, and use colours that stay distinct for colour-blind readers: the Color Blindness Simulator previews a figure as protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia and achromatopsia would show it. An APA figure also needs a number and a title above the image and any notes below it.

The chart makers draw in your browser, so the data you paste is not uploaded. For the statistics behind a chart — means, quartiles, a regression line's significance — see Statistics Calculators; the guide on how to present data covers when a table beats a figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a bar graph and a histogram?
A bar graph compares separate categories, so its bars have gaps and can be reordered. A histogram shows how one numeric variable is distributed across adjoining ranges (bins), so its bars touch and their order is fixed by the number line.
How many bins should a histogram have?
There is no single right number. The Histogram Maker offers Sturges', Scott's and the Freedman–Diaconis rules, which suit different sample sizes and shapes, or your own bin width. Try two and keep the one that shows the shape of the data without hiding it.
When should I use a pie chart instead of a bar graph?
Use a pie chart only when the slices are parts of one whole, there are about five or fewer of them, and the reader needs the share more than the exact value. Otherwise a bar graph is easier to read, because lengths along a common baseline are easier to compare than angles.
How do I put a chart into a Word document or Google Doc?
Download the chart as PNG and insert it as an image, or as SVG in recent versions of Word, which keeps it sharp when resized. Add the figure number and title in your document, above the image, as APA style asks.
What is a Pareto chart used for?
It ranks causes or categories by count in descending bars and adds a cumulative-percentage line, so you can see the few items that account for most of the total. Quality-improvement courses use it to decide what to fix first. The Pareto Chart Maker draws the 80% reference line.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. The chart makers run in your browser, and the image is created on your device when you download it.
