Pick a Style
- Letter styles. Bold and italic, cursive, small and small caps, bubble, wide, monospace, double-struck, squared and Old English text.
- Lines through letters. Strikethrough, underline and glitch text, made with combining marks.
- Flipped and reversed. The Upside Down Text Generator and Backwards Text Generator.
- Emoji and emoticons. The Emoji Search finds an emoji by name and shows its Unicode code points and escapes, the Emoji Text Generator spells words in emoji letters, and the Kaomoji Picker copies Japanese emoticons by mood.
- Symbols and numbers. Special Characters to copy and paste — dashes, arrows, math, currency and check marks — the Superscript & Subscript Generator for x² and H₂O, the Unicode Fraction Generator for ½ and ¹⁷⁄₂₄, and the Invisible Character.
- Banners and chat formatting. The ASCII Art Text Generator draws words as multi-line banners for code comments and plain-text files, and the Discord Text Formatter builds bold, spoiler, quote, code and coloured text with Discord's own markup.
How Fancy Text Works
These tools do not apply a font. They swap each letter for a different Unicode character that happens to look styled — 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 letters come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, ⓑⓤⓑⓑⓛⓔ letters from Enclosed Alphanumerics. That is why the result survives a paste into places with no formatting options at all, and also why it has limits. The Discord Text Formatter is the exception: it writes Discord's own markup rather than substitute characters, so the result renders properly and stays readable to screen readers.
| Works well | Works badly |
|---|---|
| Social media bios, usernames and captions | Body text — search engines and site search may not match the styled letters |
| Short headings in chat apps | Anything a screen reader will read aloud — styled letters can be read out one by one or skipped |
| Math notation (ℝ, ℕ) and chemical formulas (H₂O) | Essays and reports — use your word processor's bold, italic and superscript instead |
Using Styled Text Responsibly
Keep fancy text to a few words. A screen reader may announce "mathematical bold small b" for every letter, so a whole bio in script can be unreadable to a blind visitor. Put the important words — your name, what you do — in plain text, and use the styles for decoration around them. Coverage also varies: an older phone or a minimal font may show some styled letters as empty boxes.
For academic work, the right tool is formatting, not substitute characters. The Paper Formatting shelf covers headings and title pages, and the Text Cleanup & Formatting shelf changes case without changing characters. If pasted text misbehaves, the Hidden Character Detector shows what is really in it.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I get bold or cursive text in an Instagram or X bio?
- Type your text into the Bold Text Generator or Cursive Text Generator, copy the style you like, and paste it into the bio field. It works because the result is made of Unicode characters, not formatting.
- Why do some fancy letters show up as boxes?
- The device or app viewing them has no font that includes those characters. Bold, italic and circled letters are widely supported; rarer styles and combining marks fail more often on older systems.
- Is fancy text bad for accessibility?
- It can be. Screen readers may read styled letters individually or skip them. Use it for a word or two, keep key information in plain text, and avoid it in names people need to search for.
- How do I make text bold or strikethrough in Discord?
- Discord reads markup, not styled letters: asterisks around a word make it bold, double tildes strike it through, double vertical bars hide it as a spoiler, and backticks set it as code. The Discord Text Formatter builds these and previews the result before you copy it.
- How do I type a special character like © or an arrow?
- Copy it from Special Characters with one click rather than memorising keyboard codes. For a fraction such as ½ or ¾, the Unicode Fraction Generator builds it from any numerator and denominator, and the Emoji Search finds emoji by name.
- Can I use Unicode superscripts in a paper?
- For a quick note or a chat message, yes. In a paper, use your word processor's superscript and subscript formatting: it covers every character, looks consistent with your font, and survives conversion to PDF reliably.
