U.S. social work programs and journals use APA 7th edition, not MLA or Chicago. This page follows the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed., 2020), the APA Style Common Reference Examples Guide (3 March 2026), the Creating an APA Style Reference List Guide (23 February 2022), the NASW Code of Ethics (2021), the CSWE 2022 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards, and the 2025 Accreditation Standards for Practice Doctorate Social Work Programs: name the object a later reader can open, then apply that Chapter 10 or §8.9 rule.

How to Cite Social Work Sources in APA 7: Quick Answer

APA 7 for social work is author-date in the sentence and a hanging-indent reference list. The hard step is naming the work. A PDF from Social Work Abstracts is still the journal article (§10.1). The NASW Code of Ethics is a report-shaped ethics code, not a webpage. Child Maltreatment 2024 is a government report (§10.4). The 2025 practice-doctorate standards are a different CSWE object from the 2022 baccalaureate and master’s EPAS. An unrecorded supervision conversation is a personal communication (§8.9) and never enters the reference list.

Why Social Work Uses APA 7

APA is the house style of NASW Press journals (Social Work, Social Work Research, Health & Social Work, Children & Schools), CSWE’s Journal of Social Work Education, Sage’s Journal of Social Work and Research on Social Work Practice, and Clinical Social Work Journal. Author-date puts the year next to the claim, which matters when you are comparing Mary Richmond’s 1917 Social Diagnosis with a 2025 Clinical Social Work Journal study. If a seminar or a UK/Australian unit named Harvard, Chicago, or a journal house style, follow that syllabus. Do not mix numbered footnotes with APA parentheticals in one paper.

Use those when the object is already obvious. Use this page when the object is the NASW code, CSWE 2022 EPAS, the 2025 DSW standards, a Children’s Bureau statistical report, a KIDS COUNT data book, a child-welfare statute, or a field conversation a reader cannot recover.

APA’s clinical-practice references page opens with the group-author rule that also breaks most social-work reference lists:

In the reference, spell out the full name of a group author; do not use the abbreviation.
For government authors, use the name of the specific agency responsible for the work as the author.

Journal Articles in Social Work

Section 10.1 is the default for Social Work, Journal of Social Work Education, Research on Social Work Practice, Journal of Social Work, and Clinical Social Work Journal. Sentence-case the article title. Italicize the journal name and volume. Put the issue in parentheses, unitalicized, immediately after the volume. End with a DOI in https://doi.org/ form when the record has one. Finding the PDF in Social Work Abstracts, SocINDEX, or JSTOR does not add those database names to the reference.

The NASW Code of Ethics

The NASW Code of Ethics is the profession’s public standard. The 2021 revision took effect on 1 June 2021 and added self-care language plus a rewritten Standard 1.05 on cultural competence. NASW’s own page states the purpose in two sentences that should stay English in every locale:

APA’s ethics-code rule, on the same clinical-practice references page, is the template social work papers need:

References for ethics codes follow the same format as reports.
When the author and publisher are the same, omit the publisher name to avoid repetition.
To cite a specific section of an ethics code, create a reference to the full code and then indicate the specific section in the in-text citation. Use the language of the code to refer to sections (e.g., sections, provisions, standards).

Do not write “Author” in the publisher slot. That APA 6 habit is what the old “Author.” string on many social-work handouts still does. The 2021 code as a recoverable webpage:

Standard 1.07 is the confidentiality rule field papers keep violating when they quote a client. The current NASW Standard 1.07 page wording is:

Social workers should respect clients’ right to privacy. Social workers should not solicit private information from or about clients except for compelling professional reasons. Once private information is shared, standards of confidentiality apply.
Social workers should protect the confidentiality of all information obtained in the course of professional service, except for compelling professional reasons.
Social workers should not disclose identifying information when discussing clients for teaching or training purposes unless the client has consented to disclosure of confidential information.

If you discuss a case, disguise names, ages, schools, and locations; obtain consent when the person could still be identified; and say in the text that details were changed. A citation does not replace consent. Do not invent a reference-list entry such as “(social work practice, 2023)” for a disguised case — that string is not an APA source.

CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards

The 2022 EPAS is the document CSWE uses to accredit baccalaureate and master’s programs. CSWE’s accreditation page states the edition in force:

The PDF’s title page names it Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards for Baccalaureate and Master's Social Work Programs. The Commission on Educational Policy’s text was approved on 3 June 2022; the Commission on Accreditation approved the standards on 9 June 2022 and amended them on 1 September 2022. As of 1 July 2025, CSWE expects accredited programs to operate under the 2022 EPAS. Cite the PDF you opened, not a lecture that reprints Competency 4:

If you opened the 2022 EPAS Interpretation Guide instead of the standards PDF, that is a different recoverable object. The public companion posted in July 2026 is version 7.21.2026. Do not cite EPAS 2015 after your program has moved to 2022 unless you are writing a historical comparison and you actually opened the 2015 file:

CSWE 2025 Practice Doctorate Standards

DSW and other practice-doctorate papers should not borrow the 2022 baccalaureate and master’s EPAS unless that is the file they opened. CSWE now accredits practice doctorate programs under a separate 2025 document. The practice doctorate accreditation page states the approval date:

The PDF’s copyright page is more specific: the standards were approved by the Board of Accreditation on 6 February 2025. Cite that object, not the 2020–2025 pilot standards, unless you actually used the pilot file:

The practice-doctorate dissertation or capstone itself is a different object again. Format that file with How to Cite a Dissertation in APA 7, then cite these 2025 standards only when you are writing about the accreditation rules.

Child Welfare and Other Agency Reports

Section 10.4 covers reports. The title page of Child Maltreatment 2024 — released 16 January 2026 — recommends a stacked author string that names HHS, ACF, ACYF, and the Children’s Bureau. APA 7 does not copy that stack into the author slot. Use the most specific agency as the author and move parent agencies to the publisher element:

First narrative mention if you abbreviate later:

The year is 2026 because that is the publication year on the report, even though the data year is 2024. Citing “(U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2024)” for this file invents both the author grain and the date. Foundation Reports and Grey Literature

Social work papers lean on recoverable reports from foundations and nonprofits. Those are still §10.4 reports, not webpages, when you opened a dated PDF or a stable report page. The 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book (8 June 2026) is the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 37th state-trends volume. It adds 0–1,000 index scores beside the familiar rankings:

Omit a repeated publisher when the foundation is both author and site. Do not cite a press release that quotes one rank or the new 0–1,000 score as if you had opened the data book. If the only file you have is an internal needs assessment that a reader cannot retrieve, it is not a KIDS COUNT-style report. Label a recoverable unpublished PDF as [Unpublished report] after the title, or treat an irretrievable memo as a personal communication. A labelled template — not a fabricated agency — looks like this:

Books and Foundational Theorists

Section 10.2 italicizes the book title in sentence case and names the publisher. Drop the city. Include an edition statement when the title page has one. Mary E. Richmond’s Social Diagnosis is a real 1917 Russell Sage Foundation book — cite it as a book, not as a journal article:

Cite the copy you held. If you only read a textbook’s two-paragraph summary of the life model, the strengths perspective, or anti-oppressive practice, you have not cited Germain and Gitterman, Saleebey, or Dominelli; you have cited the textbook, or you need a secondary citation that names both. Statutes and Social Policy

Child welfare, Medicaid, disability, and family-leave assignments need legal references (APA 7 Chapter 11), not the report template. APA’s statute pattern, restated on the clinical-practice references page, is:

The underlying pattern for this kind of reference is as follows: Name of the Statute, Title number Source § Section number(s) (Year). Note this format does not include any italics.

The year is the edition of the United States Code you opened, not the year Congress first passed the act. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act as printed in the 2024 U.S. Code begins at 42 U.S.C. § 5101:

Cite the section you used. If you mean the whole scattered act, say so in the text and point to the range or to et seq. Court opinions and Bluebook-heavy law papers belong on How to Cite Legal Cases and the Law Citation Guide, not here.

Field Notes, Interviews, and Personal Communications

APA 7 §8.9 is the rule field instructors keep having to repeat. The APA Style personal-communications page and the Creating an APA Style Reference List Guide both say the same thing:

Because readers cannot retrieve the information in personal communications, personal communications are not included in the reference list; they are cited in the text only.
An exception is personal communications, which are cited in the text of your paper but are not included in the reference list (see Section 8.9 in the seventh edition Publication Manual).

APA’s own examples stay in this form. Use initials, a surname, and as exact a date as you have. Do not invent a communicator, and do not put field notes in the reference list:

Unrecorded supervision, a live guest lecture, an email from a county administrator, and your own undated process recordings are the same class of source. If you later deposit a transcript in a recoverable archive, cite the archive. Participant quotations from your IRB-approved study are not personal communications; they are data (APA 7 §8.36) and stay out of the reference list for a different reason. What This Page Is Not

It is not the Psychology Citation Guide (tests, DSM, PsyArXiv). It is not the Nursing Citation Guide (UpToDate, Cochrane, ANA code, NICE). It is not the Education Citation Guide (ERIC ED versus EJ, NCES, Common Core). Those pages share APA 7’s author-date engine. They do not share the NASW code, CSWE 2022 EPAS, the 2025 DSW standards, or Children’s Bureau statistical reports.

Common Mistakes in Social Work Papers

  • Treating Mary Richmond’s Social Diagnosis as a journal article. It is a 1917 book.
  • Writing “Author.” as the publisher of the NASW code. APA 7 omits a repeated publisher.
  • Putting NASW or CSWE in the reference list as an abbreviation. Spell the group author out; abbreviate only in the text after the first mention.
  • Citing the 2022 BSW/MSW EPAS when the file you opened is the 2025 practice-doctorate standards, or the reverse.
  • Copying the Child Maltreatment recommended-citation stack instead of using the Children’s Bureau as the specific author.
  • Dating the 2024 volume 2024 because the data year is 2024. The publication year on that volume is 2026.
  • Inventing a reference-list entry for field notes, supervision, or a disguised case example.
  • Quoting a client without consent and without removing identifiers, which violates NASW Standard 1.07 even when the APA string is perfect.
  • Citing a database — Social Work Abstracts, SocINDEX, CINAHL — as if it were the work.
  • Using the year Congress passed CAPTA as the U.S. Code edition year.

Generate the APA 7 strings after you have named the object

The APA style page will format author-date citations. It cannot tell the NASW code from a Children’s Bureau PDF until you can. Do field notes go in the APA reference list?
No, if a reader cannot recover them. APA 7 §8.9 cites unrecorded interviews, supervision, emails, and process recordings in the text only, with initials, surname, and a date. Can I cite a client example in a social work paper?

How do I cite CAPTA or another federal social-work statute?
Use APA 7 Chapter 11, not the report template: Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, 42 U.S.C. § 5101 (2024) if you opened the 2024 United States Code. The year is the code edition, not 1974. Court cases belong on the legal-case guide.
Should I cite Social Work Abstracts in the reference list?
No. Cite the journal article, report, or book you retrieved. Social Work Abstracts, SocINDEX, and JSTOR are retrieval tools. APA 7 names a database only when the work is limited-circulation or proprietary to that database.
