There is no official Spain-to-US table. These are published routes that give different letters for the same mark. Use the one your receiving university states.
Your marks out of 10
Spain's own average counts only credits obtained, so this is off by default. A US evaluator may count failures.

Matrícula de Honor can go only to a mark of 9.0 or more, and to at most 5% of a subject's students (a single one if fewer than 20 are enrolled). The receiving university decides which table applies.
How to Use the Spanish Grade Converter
- 1. Choose a conversion route. Pick a published table or enter your own cutoffs. The routes give different letters for the same mark, so use the one your receiving university names.
- 2. Enter every course. Type the mark out of 10 (decimals like 7.5 are fine) and its ECTS credits. Tick Matrícula de Honor where you received it; it only counts for a 9.0 or more.
- 3. Decide about failures. Spain's own average counts only the credits you obtained. Tick the option if you want failed courses counted as F, as some US evaluators do.
- 4. Read the result. You get the weighted average, the GPA, the official band for the average, the number of Matrículas de Honor and a course-by-course table.
How Spanish Grades Work
Spanish university results are marked from 0 to 10 with one decimal, and the national regulation, Real Decreto 1125/2003, names four bands. Below 5.0 is suspenso (fail), 5.0 to 6.9 is aprobado, 7.0 to 8.9 is notable and 9.0 to 10 is sobresaliente. The mention Matrícula de Honor can go to a mark of 9.0 or more, to at most 5% of the students enrolled in a subject that year, or to a single student where fewer than 20 are enrolled. It is rare for that reason.
| Mark | Band | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 0–4.9 | Suspenso | Fail |
| 5.0–6.9 | Aprobado | Pass |
| 7.0–8.9 | Notable | Very good |
| 9.0–10 | Sobresaliente | Outstanding |
| 9.0 or more, within the 5% limit | Matrícula de Honor | Honours mention on top of sobresaliente |
Source: Real Decreto 1125/2003, de 5 de septiembre, article 5 (BOE-A-2003-17643). The English meanings are translations, not legal wording.
The same article defines the record's average: the credits obtained, each multiplied by the mark, divided by the total credits obtained. Failed courses earn no credits, so they are not in it. That is the average the tool shows by default.
Two Published Routes to US Letters
| Mark | NC State table | Via ECTS (Cantabria, then NC State) |
|---|---|---|
| 9.0–10 | A | A |
| 8.0–8.9 | A− | B+ |
| 7.0–7.9 | B+ | B+ |
| 6.0–6.9 | B | B |
| 5.5–5.9 | B− | B |
| 5.0–5.4 | C | B |
| below 5.0 | F | F |
NC State University Study Abroad, Europe Grade Equivalencies, Spain nota table and ECTS table. Universidad de Cantabria, Assessment and grading scale, which maps sobresaliente to ECTS A, notable to B and aprobado to C. Both print letters only, so the GPA uses the common plus/minus values.
The routes disagree mainly in the middle and at the pass mark: a 5.0 is a C in one and a B in the other. That is why the converter lets you switch tables or type your own cutoffs.
Worked Example
Six courses: 8.5 (6 credits), 7.2 (6), 9.4 with Matrícula de Honor (6), 6.1 (6), 5.5 (3) and a failed 4.2 (6). The failed course earns no credits, so the average is over 27 credits: 7.54/10, a notable. On the NC State table the GPA is 3.41; via the ECTS route it is 3.36. If an evaluator counts the failure as an F across all 33 credits, the NC State GPA falls to 2.79.
The receiving university decides
None of these tables is official. A US university, graduate school or credential evaluator may use its own scale for Spanish marks, and some use different bands for different Spanish universities. If it publishes one, use that.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I convert Spanish grades to the US GPA scale?
- Convert each mark to a letter with a published table, turn the letters into grade points and average them weighted by credits. On the NC State table, 9 to 10 is an A, 8 to 8.9 an A−, 7 to 7.9 a B+ and 6 to 6.9 a B. Different tables give different results, so use the one your receiving university names.
- What is a sobresaliente in the US?
- Sobresaliente is 9.0 to 10 out of 10, the top band. It maps to an A on both routes in this tool. A Matrícula de Honor is a distinction on top of it, and neither route here gives it more than a 4.0.
- What is the pass mark in Spain?
- 5.0 out of 10. Real Decreto 1125/2003 treats 5.0 to 6.9 as aprobado and anything below 5.0 as suspenso.
- What is a Matrícula de Honor?
- It is an honours mention for a mark of 9.0 or more. It can go to at most 5% of the students enrolled in a subject in a year, or to one student where fewer than 20 are enrolled.
- Are failed courses included in the average?
- In Spain's official record average, no: it divides by the credits obtained. A US evaluator may treat a failed course as an F in the GPA. Tick the option in the tool to see both.
- Is a 7 in Spain a B?
- On the NC State table a 7.0 to 7.9 is a B+, and on the ECTS route it is also a B+. The custom option's starting cutoffs (A from 9, B from 7, C from 5) read it as a plain B. Check which table your university applies.
