A percentile rank is the percentage of students with scores equal to or lower than yours. Nationally representative percentiles weight a sample of all U.S. 11th and 12th graders, whether or not they take the SAT; user percentiles use the actual scores of students who graduated in the past three school years.

Work backward from a percentile

Nationally representative percentile: the lowest total with a percentile of at least 90 is 1290.

SAT user percentile: the lowest total with a percentile of at least 90 is 1360.

How to Use the SAT Percentile Calculator

  1. 1. Enter your section scores. Type your Reading and Writing and your Math score, each from 200 to 800 in steps of 10. The total is the sum.
  2. 2. Or enter just a total. If you only know your total, from 400 to 1600, type it in the second box.
  3. 3. Read both percentiles. For the total and each section you get the nationally representative percentile and the SAT user percentile, as College Board prints them.
  4. 4. Work backward. Enter a percentile from 1 to 99 to see the lowest total that reaches it in each group.

Two Percentiles, Two Comparison Groups

College Board defines a percentile rank as the percentage of students with scores equal to or lower than yours. It publishes two versions, because the answer depends on who you are compared with (College Board Research, SAT Nationally Representative and User Percentiles, retrieved October 2026).

  • Nationally representative percentiles come from a research study of U.S. students in 11th and 12th grade, weighted to represent all U.S. students in those grades, whether or not they usually take the SAT.
  • SAT user percentiles are based on the actual SAT scores of students who graduated in the past three school years — the people who really sat the test.

Because the second group is made of people who chose to take the SAT, a score in the upper half of the scale ranks lower there. A 1200 is at the 81st percentile nationally and the 75th percentile among users. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions. College Board's table does not carry a data-year label, so treat the figures as the current published version and expect them to be revised.

Selected rows from College Board's published table. From about 960 downward the user percentile is the higher of the two, because the user group leaves out students who do not take the test.

Reading the Tables

College Board prints 99+ at the top of the scale and 1- at the bottom, and the calculator shows them as printed rather than rounding them to a plain number. Section percentiles are not the same as the total's: the Reading and Writing and Math sections have their own tables, and the same section score can rank differently in each. A Math score of 600 is at the 81st percentile nationally and the 75th among users, while a Reading and Writing score of 600 is at the 79th and the 72nd.

Worked Example

A student scores 700 in Reading and Writing and 690 in Math, a total of 1390. The total is at the 97th percentile nationally and the 92nd among users. By section, 700 in Reading and Writing is at 97 and 92, and 690 in Math is at 94 and 90. To reach the 90th user percentile on the total, a student needs a 1360; for the 90th nationally representative percentile, a 1290.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SAT user and nationally representative percentiles?
The nationally representative percentile compares you with all U.S. 11th and 12th graders, weighted to reflect them whether or not they take the SAT. The user percentile compares you only with students who actually took it, from the past three graduating classes. A 1200 is at 81 nationally and 75 among users.
Which SAT percentile do colleges use?
College Board gives colleges both, and policies vary. Because a college's applicants are people who took the test, the user percentile is the more direct comparison for most readers. Either way, check the college's own published score ranges.
What SAT score is the 90th percentile?
In College Board's current table, a 1360 reaches the 90th user percentile and a 1290 reaches the 90th nationally representative percentile. Exact figures can change when College Board updates its tables.
What SAT score is the 50th percentile?
A 1020 is the 50th user percentile and a 1010 is the 50th nationally representative percentile in the current table. Both sit near the middle of the 400 to 1600 scale.
What does 99+ mean on an SAT percentile?
College Board prints 99+ for the very top of the distribution instead of a plain 99, and 1- for the very bottom. The calculator keeps those symbols as printed.
Can two students with the same total have different section percentiles?
Yes. The total and each section have their own tables. A student with 700 in Math and 600 in Reading and Writing has the same total as one with 600 and 700, but each section score ranks differently.
