Name Tag Generator
Paste a class list and print a name tag or a folding desk name plate for every student. Choose a size, a design and a colour, add a second line such as a table or room, and print with dashed cut guides on Letter or A4. Leave the list empty for blank tags to write on. Free, no sign-up.
Add a bar and a second line for a name — for example: Ben | Table 2. Leave the list empty to print blank tags to write on.
A class, room or table. A second line typed after a bar replaces it for that name.
Prints at true size on the paper chosen above, with a 0.5 in margin kept clear. In the print dialog choose the same paper, set Scale to 100% (Actual size), and turn off Fit to page and Headers and footers.
How to Use the Name Tag Generator
- 1. Add the names. Type one name per line. To add a second line — a table, a room, a pronoun, a role — put a bar after the name: Ben | Table 2. A line typed in the box under the list applies to every tag that has no second line of its own.
- 2. Choose the kind. Name tags tile the page for sticking on or pinning; desk name plates are long strips you fold in half so the name shows on both sides. Pick small, medium or large.
- 3. Pick the look. A coloured band with a greeting such as Hello, my name is, a framed name or the name alone; bold sans-serif, bold serif or a script font; one of six colours, including black and white.
- 4. Print and cut. Choose Letter or A4, print at 100% with headers and footers off, and cut on the dashed outlines. Lists longer than a page continue on more pages.
Sizes and How Many Fit
| Kind and size | Each piece | Per Letter page | Per A4 page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name tag, small | 60 × 40 mm | 18 | 18 |
| Name tag, medium | 85 × 55 mm | 8 | 8 |
| Name tag, large | 90 × 70 mm | 6 | 6 |
| Desk plate, small | 60 mm flat, 30 mm folded | 4 | 4 |
| Desk plate, medium | 80 mm flat, 40 mm folded | 3 | 3 |
| Desk plate, large | 110 mm flat, 55 mm folded | 2 | 2 |
Portrait pages. The grid is centred inside a 0.5 inch margin on Letter and a 12 mm margin on A4, so the pieces never run into the printer's unprintable edge. Landscape pages fit a different number.
Desk Name Plates That Stand Up
A desk name plate is a strip of paper folded along its middle into a tent. For the name to read the right way up from both sides, the top half of the strip must print upside down: when you fold it, that half becomes the back. The generator does this for you and draws the fold as a long dashed line, with the cut outline around the whole strip. Fold with the printed faces outward, crease the dashed line firmly, and the plate stands by itself on a desk. Card stock stands better than copy paper if your printer takes it.
Designs That Are Easy to Read
- Large, high-contrast names. The name is set as large as the tag allows, in dark ink on white. Long names shrink to fit the width rather than wrapping.
- First names only on desk plates for younger children. Full names on a small tag end up tiny; put the surname on the second line if you need it.
- Black and white when printing in bulk. It saves colour ink and photocopies cleanly. Coloured bands help with sorting groups — one colour for each table or team.
- Blank tags for the first day. With the list empty, the page fills with tags that have a line for the name, so students or visitors can write their own.
Lettering comes from the fonts on your device and the preview is what prints. Names never leave your browser: nothing is uploaded or stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I make desk name plates for my class?
- Choose Desk name plates, paste your class list, and pick a size. Print, cut along the dashed outline and fold each strip on its long dashed line so the name faces outward on both sides. The top half prints upside down on purpose, so it reads correctly once folded.
- Can I print blank name tags to write on?
- Yes. Clear the names box and the page fills with tags, each with a line for writing a name by hand, in whatever design and colour you chose. The coloured band and greeting still print, so they look like the rest of your set.
- How do I put a second line, like a table or room, on each tag?
- Type the name, a vertical bar, then the extra text on the same line: Priya | Room 12. For a line that is the same on every tag, type it in the box under the list; a bar-separated line on a name replaces it for that tag.
- Will this fit pre-cut label sheets such as Avery?
- Not exactly. The tags sit in a centred grid with dashed cut outlines, designed for plain paper, so their positions will not match a particular label sheet's template. Print on plain paper and cut, or on sticker paper that is not pre-cut.
- How many names can I print at once?
- Up to 200 names in one list. They run onto as many pages as needed, with the same number of tags on each page. The page counter next to the print button shows the total.
- Why is my long name so small?
- Names shrink to fit the width of the tag instead of wrapping onto a second line. Choose a larger size, switch the lettering to bold sans-serif, or put the surname on the second line after a bar so the first name can stay large.
- Are the tags printed at the size listed?
- Yes, when the print dialog uses the same paper size with the scale at 100% and headers and footers off. The page is drawn in millimetres at real paper size, so an 85 × 55 mm tag measures 85 × 55 mm after printing.
