Staff Paper Generator

Print blank manuscript paper at a true staff size: treble, bass, a braced grand staff for piano, or a blank staff with no clef. Choose the distance between lines from engraved size up to beginner size, set how many staves go on a page, add barlines, and print on Letter or A4. Free, no sign-up.

1 page

Prints at true size on the paper chosen above, with a 0.5 in margin kept clear. In the print dialog choose the same paper, set Scale to 100% (Actual size), and turn off Fit to page and Headers and footers.

Staff height 8 mm — 2 mm between lines.

How to Use the Staff Paper Generator

  1. 1. Choose the staff. Treble clef and Bass clef print one staff per line, Grand staff prints a treble and a bass staff joined by a brace for piano, and Blank staff prints five lines with no clef.
  2. 2. Choose the size. Pick the distance between lines. Engraved music is small, a standard manuscript size suits most handwriting, and the larger sizes are for children learning to read and write notes. Or type a custom size in millimetres.
  3. 3. Choose the layout. Let the page fit as many staves as it can, or ask for a number; add barlines to divide each staff into equal measures; choose how many pages; and add title and composer lines if you want them.
  4. 4. Print at 100%. The staves are drawn at true scale, so print on the paper size you chose, with the scale on Actual size and headers and footers off. The margin is 0.5 inch on Letter and 12 mm on A4.

Standard Proportions

A staff is five lines with four equal spaces between them, and the distance between two lines — the staff space — is the unit everything else is measured in, so the paper looks the same at any size. Lines are about 0.13 of a space thick and barlines about 0.16, a little heavier. A single staff is four spaces tall. On a grand staff the treble and bass staves are eight spaces apart, which leaves room for the ledger lines around middle C, and the systems on the page are at least seven spaces apart so notes and ledger lines never touch the staff above or below.

Portrait pages with a clef drawn. Landscape fits fewer staves and gives longer ones. Large clefs rise above and drop below their staff, so the first and last staves keep a little more clearance from the edge of the paper.

Clefs, Honestly

The treble clef winds around the G above middle C, on the second line from the bottom, and the bass clef marks the F below middle C, on the second line from the top, between its two dots. Both are drawn here as simple single-weight outlines rather than an engraver's calligraphic glyphs, so they sit on the right lines and read clearly but look plainer than a printed score's. Turn the clefs off to write your own, or choose the blank staff for other clefs such as alto and tenor. Everything is drawn in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should manuscript paper be?
For handwriting, a staff space of about 2 to 2.5 mm — a staff 8 to 10 mm tall — is a common choice, and it gives twelve staves on a Letter page. Printed sheet music is often smaller, around 7 mm, and children usually need much bigger staves. Preview a few sizes before you print.
How do I print grand staff paper for piano?
Choose Grand staff. Each system has a treble staff over a bass staff, joined by a brace and a left barline, with eight staff spaces between the two staves for ledger lines around middle C. At 2 mm, five systems fit on a Letter page and six on A4.
How many staves are on a page?
By default the page is filled with as many as fit at the size you chose: twelve on Letter and thirteen on A4 at 2 mm. You can ask for fewer, and the staves are then spread down the page. If you ask for more than fit, the page prints the most that fit and a notice says so.
Can I print staff paper with no clef?
Yes. Pick Blank staff, or keep a clef option and untick Draw the clef at the start of each staff. The lines then start a little way in, ready for a clef of your own.
How do I add barlines or measures?
Choose the number of measures per staff. The staff is divided into that many equal measures after the clef, with a barline at the end of each. Leave it at None for continuous staves, which is how most blank manuscript paper is printed.
Will the staff size be accurate when I print?
Yes, if the print dialog uses the same paper size, 100% scale and no headers or footers. The page is drawn in millimetres at the real size of the paper, so a 2 mm staff space prints as 2 mm. Browsers that ignore the page size may rescale, so check one measurement on the first page.
Can I add a title and composer to the page?
Yes. Tick Title and composer lines on page 1. Type a title to have it printed above the first staff, or leave it empty for a Title line to write on. A Composer line is added either way, and the first page then fits one or two fewer staves.
