Words from ENABLE, a public-domain word list used by many word games. It is not the official Scrabble dictionary, so a few words differ.

How to Use the Anagram Solver

  1. Type your letters. Up to 15, in any order — spaces, commas, and capitals are ignored. The tiles appear above the results in alphabetical order.
  2. Add blanks if you have them. Each ? stands for any one letter; in the results, letters spelled with a blank are underlined.
  3. Set the shortest word. Three letters is the default; choose 2 for every two-letter play, or raise it to see only long words.
  4. Read down the groups. Anagrams that use every tile come first, then shorter words grouped by length. Copy all puts the whole list on the clipboard.

How the Solver Works

Two words are anagrams when they use exactly the same letters. Sort each word's letters alphabetically and anagrams collapse to one key: listen, silent, enlist, inlets, and tinsel all become eilnst. Finding shorter words is the same test relaxed — a word qualifies if every one of its letters can be taken from the rack without using a tile twice, with a blank covering any letter that is missing.

Type listen with the minimum at three letters and the solver finds 79 words: six that use all six tiles — elints, enlist, inlets, listen, silent, tinsel — then 16 five-letter words, 32 four-letter words, and 25 three-letter words. Garden gives four full anagrams: danger, gander, garden, ranged.

About the Word List

The solver uses ENABLE, the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon — a public-domain list of about 173,000 English words compiled for word games and used by many of them. CitationEasy keeps its words of 2 to 15 letters, minus a short list of slurs — 168,522 in all — in a plain text file that your browser downloads the first time you search. After that every search runs locally in a few milliseconds, and your letters are never sent anywhere.

ENABLE is generous with rare, archaic, and technical words, so expect results such as elints (pieces of electronic intelligence) and anestri (a plural of anestrus). It is also an older list that is no longer updated, so it lacks words that official tournament lists have added since, such as qi, za, and ok.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an anagram?
A word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another, each used exactly once: listen and silent, garden and danger. In word games the term is often used more loosely for any word you can make from your letters, which is why the solver lists shorter words as well.
How do blank tiles work?
Type ? for each blank. A blank can stand for any letter, so quiz? can make quip by using the blank as p. In the results, the letters supplied by a blank are underlined so you can see which tile is doing the work.
Is this the official Scrabble dictionary?
No. Tournament Scrabble uses the NASPA Word List in North America and Collins Scrabble Words in most other countries, and neither is public domain. ENABLE overlaps heavily with both but is older, so it lacks newer additions such as qi and za and includes a few words they have dropped. For a disputed play, check the list your game or club uses.
Why do I see words I do not recognize?
ENABLE includes rare, archaic, and technical words, plus plurals and verb forms of them. They are valid in most word games that use similar lists, but look one up before you rely on it in writing.
How many letters can I enter?
Up to 15 tiles, blanks included — the width of a Scrabble board, so no longer word could be played. With many blanks the lists get long; each length group shows the first 120 words and a button to show the rest.
Are my letters sent anywhere?
No. The only download is the word list itself, from this site, and it happens once. Every search after that runs in your browser.
