How to Use the MCAT Score Calculator
- 1. Enter four section scores. Each section is scored from 118 to 132: Chemical and Physical Foundations, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS), Biological and Biochemical Foundations, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations.
- 2. Read the total. The four scores are added, so the total runs from 472 to 528. The working line shows the sum.
- 3. Check the percentile ranks. You get the rank for the total and for each section. Already know your total? Type it in the second box instead.
- 4. Work backward. Enter a percentile rank to see the lowest total that reaches it.
How the MCAT Total Is Built
The MCAT total is the sum of the four section scores. Four scores of 118 give the minimum of 472, and four of 132 give the maximum of 528. A student with 128, 127, 129 and 126 has a total of 510. The score is not an average: one strong section lifts the total by exactly the points it adds.
Percentile ranks come from AAMC's Summary of MCAT Total and Section Scores, in effect May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027 (AAMC percentile ranks). They are based on 305,494 scores from the 2023, 2024 and 2025 testing years combined, and AAMC updates them each May 1. In that table the mean total is 500.6, with a standard deviation of 11.2.
| Total score | Percentile rank |
|---|---|
| 528 | 100 |
| 520 | 97 |
| 515 | 91 |
| 510 | 79 |
| 505 | 64 |
| 500 | 48 |

A Different Definition From GRE and LSAT
AAMC's percentile rank is the percentage of scores equal to or less than a score. ETS (GRE) and LSAC (LSAT) instead publish the percentage of scores strictly lower. The gap between the two is the share of test takers who scored exactly your score, a few percent at most in the middle of the scale. At the top it shows: an MCAT total of 525 or above has a rank of 100, because every score is at or below it. Do not compare an MCAT rank directly with a GRE or LSAT percentile on a close call.
Sections are ranked separately because each has its own distribution. A 128 is at the 85th percentile in Chemical and Physical Foundations but the 90th in CARS and the 84th in Biological and Biochemical Foundations. The section means in the table are 124.9, 124.6, 125.1 and 125.9, so the Psychological, Social, and Biological section is the highest on average.
Worked Example
Scores of 128 (Chem/Phys), 127 (CARS), 129 (Bio/Biochem) and 126 (Psych/Soc) add to 510, which has a percentile rank of 79: 79 percent of scores were equal to or less than 510, and 21 percent were higher. The sections rank at 85, 84, 90 and 54. To reach a rank of 90 on the total, a student would need a 515, which has a rank of 91.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How is the MCAT total score calculated?
- It is the sum of your four section scores, each reported from 118 to 132. The total therefore runs from 472 to 528. For example, section scores of 128, 127, 129 and 126 give a total of 510.
- What MCAT score is the 90th percentile?
- In AAMC's table in effect May 2026 to April 2027, a 515 has a percentile rank of 91 and a 514 has a rank of 89, so 515 is the lowest total that reaches a rank of 90. Ranks are updated each May, so the exact score can move by a point or so.
- What is the average MCAT score?
- In the table behind these ranks the mean total is 500.6, and a 500 has a percentile rank of 48. That is the average among everyone who tested in 2023 to 2025. It is not the average of students admitted to medical school, which each school publishes for itself.
- What does MCAT percentile rank mean?
- AAMC defines it as the percentage of scores equal to or less than a given score, based on all results from the 2023, 2024 and 2025 testing years. A rank of 79 for a 510 means 79 percent of scores were at or below 510.
- Why are the section percentile ranks different from each other?
- Each section has its own score distribution, so the same score ranks differently. A 128 is at the 85th percentile in Chemical and Physical Foundations, the 90th in CARS, the 84th in Biological and Biochemical Foundations and the 76th in Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations.
- Do MCAT percentile ranks change every year?
- Yes. AAMC updates them each May 1 using the three most recent testing years, so the same total can sit one or two points differently from one year to the next. Use the table for the year that matches your score report if you are comparing.
