- How do I count vowels in a text?
- Paste or type your text into the box. The counter updates live, showing the total number of vowels, consonants, and letters, plus a breakdown card for each vowel.
- Which letters count as vowels?
- The letters A, E, I, O, and U are always counted as vowels. The letter Y is counted as a consonant by default, but you can turn on the 'Count Y as a vowel' option to include it.
- Is the vowel count case-sensitive?
- No. Uppercase and lowercase letters are treated the same, so 'A' and 'a' are both counted as the vowel A.
- What percentage of English text is vowels?
- In typical English prose, vowels make up roughly 38 to 40 percent of all letters. E is the most common letter overall, and A, I, and O are also among the top ten.
- Are spaces, numbers, and punctuation included in the counts?
- No. Only the letters A through Z are classified as vowels or consonants. Spaces, digits, and punctuation are ignored, so the vowel and consonant percentages always add up to 100 percent of the letters.
