Frequently Asked Questions

How do I count letter frequency in a text?
Paste or type your text into the box and the table updates instantly. Each letter is listed with its count, its percentage of all letters, and a bar showing its relative frequency.
Is the letter count case-sensitive?
By default the count is case-insensitive, so 'A' and 'a' are combined into one row. Turn on the case-sensitive option to count uppercase and lowercase letters separately.
Can I sort the results alphabetically instead of by frequency?
Yes. Use the sort toggle to switch between sorting by frequency (most common letter first) and alphabetical order (A to Z).
What is letter frequency analysis used for?
Letter frequency analysis is used in cryptography to break substitution ciphers, in linguistics to study languages, and in word games like Scrabble and Wordle to pick likely letters. In typical English text, E, T, A, O, and I are the most common letters.
Are numbers, spaces, and punctuation counted?
No. Only the letters A through Z are counted in the frequency table. The totals section shows both the letter count and the full character count, so you can see how many non-letter characters your text contains.
