Frequently Asked Questions
- How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
- WPM uses the standard definition of a "word" as 5 characters. The test counts your correctly typed characters, divides by 5, and divides by the minutes elapsed. Mistyped characters don't count toward your speed, so accuracy matters.
- What is a good typing speed?
- Average typing speed is around 40 WPM. 50-60 WPM is solid for everyday schoolwork, 70-80 WPM is fast, and professional typists often exceed 90 WPM. Accuracy above 95% matters more than raw speed.
- How is accuracy measured?
- Accuracy is the percentage of characters you typed that match the prompt exactly, including spaces and punctuation. Every character is compared against the prompt in order, and mismatches count as errors.
- Why can't I paste text into the test?
- Pasting is blocked to keep results honest — the test measures what you can type, not what you can copy. Every character has to be typed by hand.
- Can I retake the test with different text?
- Yes. Click Restart and the sentences are reshuffled into a new order, so each attempt gives you a fresh prompt. You can also switch between 1, 3, and 5 minute durations.
- How can I improve my typing speed?
- Practice regularly with proper finger placement (home row), prioritize accuracy over speed, and avoid looking at the keyboard. Speed follows naturally once accurate touch typing becomes muscle memory — short daily tests work better than occasional long ones.
