Frequently Asked Questions
- What punctuation does the tool remove?
- It removes all Unicode punctuation and symbols — periods, commas, quotes, brackets, dashes, currency signs, math symbols, and more — not just the basic ASCII marks.
- Can I keep certain characters?
- Yes. Type any characters into the "keep these characters" field and they are preserved while everything else is stripped. For example, keep # and @ when cleaning social media text.
- What does "keep hyphens in words" do?
- It preserves hyphens that sit between two letters — so "well-known" stays intact — while stranded hyphens and dashes elsewhere are still removed.
- What about apostrophes in contractions?
- Enable "keep apostrophes in contractions" and apostrophes between letters — as in don't or it's — are preserved, while quotation marks elsewhere are removed.
- Why do I see double spaces after removing punctuation?
- Removing a mark that had spaces around it can leave two spaces in a row. Enable "collapse double spaces" and the tool squeezes them back to a single space automatically.
