- How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
- Divide the percentage by 100 to get a decimal, then multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 80 is (15 ÷ 100) × 80 = 0.15 × 80 = 12.
- How do I find what percent one number is of another?
- Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. For example, 30 out of 120 is (30 ÷ 120) × 100 = 25%.
- How is percent change calculated?
- Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. Going from 50 to 65 is ((65 − 50) ÷ 50) × 100 = 30%, a 30% increase. A negative result is a decrease.
- What is the difference between percent change and percentage points?
- Percentage points measure the simple difference between two percentages, while percent change is relative to the starting value. Going from 40% to 50% is a rise of 10 percentage points, but a 25% increase.
- Can percent change be more than 100%?
- Yes. If a value more than doubles, the percent increase exceeds 100%. Going from 20 to 60 is a 200% increase, because the change (40) is twice the starting value (20).
