Frequently Asked Questions

How do I split names into random groups?
Paste your names into the text box, one per line, choose either how many groups you want or how big each group should be, and click Generate Groups. The tool shuffles the names randomly and deals them into groups.
What happens when names don't divide evenly?
Leftover names are spread across the groups as evenly as possible, so group sizes never differ by more than one person. For example, 10 names in 3 groups gives groups of 4, 3, and 3.
Are the groups really random?
Yes. The tool uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle, the standard unbiased shuffling algorithm, so every possible arrangement of names is equally likely. Click Regenerate for a fresh random split.
What is the difference between the two modes?
"Number of groups" makes exactly that many groups and divides everyone among them. "Group size" fixes how many people go in each group and creates as many groups as needed to fit everyone.
Can I copy all the groups at once?
Yes. The Copy All button copies every group with its members as plain text, ready to paste into a document, email, or chat message.
