How to Use the Spanish Number Converter
- 1. Enter a number. Whole numbers up to 24 digits work, and so do negatives and decimals. Spaces, points and commas between digit groups are fine.
- 2. Choose cardinal or ordinal. Cardinals count (tres, veintiuno); ordinals rank (tercero, vigésimo primero). Ordinals run from 1 to 1000.
- 3. Say what the number counts. Pick a masculine or feminine noun so that uno and the hundreds agree with it, or choose none to get the counting forms. For ordinals, pick the gender and whether the word stands before a masculine noun.
- 4. Read the result and the rules. Under the words you see any other correct spelling and a short note for each rule that shaped the answer, then copy the words.
How Spanish Spells Its Numbers
The Real Academia Española and the Asociación de Academias (RAE-ASALE) write 16 to 19 and 21 to 29 as single words — dieciséis, diecinueve, veintiuno, veintinueve — and join the other tens to the unit with y: treinta y uno, noventa y nueve. Veintidós, veintitrés and veintiséis keep their accent. Hundreds are one word each, and nothing links them to what follows: ciento veintiuno, quinientos cincuenta y cinco.
Cien is the form on its own, before a noun, and before mil or millones (cien mil, cien millones). Ciento is used when more words follow within the hundred: 101 is ciento uno and 115 is ciento quince. A thousand is mil, never un mil: 1001 is mil uno and 2026 is dos mil veintiséis.
| Number | Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | cien / ciento | cien / ciento |
| 200 | doscientos | doscientas |
| 300 | trescientos | trescientas |
| 500 | quinientos | quinientas |
| 700 | setecientos | setecientas |
| 900 | novecientos | novecientas |
Uno, Un and Una: the Apocope
Uno is the word for counting. Before a masculine noun it shortens to un — the apocope — and the shortening carries into compound numbers: veintiún soldados, treinta y un años, ciento un opositores. With a feminine noun the word is una: veintiuna casas, treinta y una páginas.
Hundreds keep agreeing with a feminine noun even when mil sits between them: doscientas mil personas, never doscientos mil personas. The uno before mil is different. The Diccionario panhispánico de dudas accepts both veintiún mil páginas and veintiuna mil páginas, and the tool shows the shortened form first with the full form as the alternative; tick the checkbox to make the full form the main answer. Before millón every part stays masculine, because millón is a masculine noun: doscientos millones de personas.
| Number | Counting | Masculine noun | Feminine noun |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | uno | un | una |
| 21 | veintiuno | veintiún | veintiuna |
| 31 | treinta y uno | treinta y un | treinta y una |
| 201 | doscientos uno | doscientos un | doscientas una |
| 21 000 | veintiún mil | veintiún mil | veintiún mil / veintiuna mil |
| 200 000 | doscientos mil | doscientos mil | doscientas mil |
Millions, Billions and the Long Scale
Spanish counts in groups of six digits, the long scale. A thousand million is mil millones (109), and un billón is a million million (1012), not the US billion; mil billones is 1015 and un trillón is 1018. The RAE advises against using billón for 109, a calque of American English, and offers millardo or mil millones instead. Million and its relatives are nouns: a round one takes de before a noun (un millón de personas), but not when other numbers follow (un millón doscientas mil personas).
Ordinals: Primero to Milésimo
The ordinals up to ten are irregular — primero, segundo, tercero, cuarto, quinto, sexto, séptimo, octavo, noveno, décimo — and 11 and 12 are undécimo and duodécimo. From 13 to 19 and 21 to 29 the RAE writes the compound as one word, decimotercero or vigesimoprimero, and also accepts two words, décimo tercero or vigésimo primero. From 30 up the parts are written separately and each one agrees in gender: trigésima primera. Primero and tercero lose their final vowel before a masculine singular noun — el primer día, el vigesimotercer aniversario — but not before a feminine one: la tercera edición.
| Number | Ordinal | Number | Ordinal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | décimo | 100 | centésimo |
| 20 | vigésimo | 200 | ducentésimo |
| 30 | trigésimo | 300 | tricentésimo |
| 40 | cuadragésimo | 500 | quingentésimo |
| 50 | quincuagésimo | 900 | noningentésimo |
| 90 | nonagésimo | 1000 | milésimo |
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is it veintiuno, veintiún or veintiuna?
- All three are right in different places. Veintiuno is the counting form (the answer to “how many?”). Veintiún is used before a masculine noun and before mil or millones: veintiún años, veintiún mil. Veintiuna goes with a feminine noun: veintiuna casas.
- When do I use cien and when ciento?
- Use cien for exactly 100 on its own, before a noun, and before mil or millones (cien mil, cien millones). Use ciento whenever another number follows inside the same hundred: ciento uno, ciento veinte.
- Is it doscientos mil personas or doscientas mil personas?
- Doscientas mil personas. Hundreds from 200 to 900 agree in gender with the noun they count, even when mil comes between them. Before millones they stay masculine, because millón is a masculine noun: doscientos millones de personas.
- How do you say a billion in Spanish?
- A thousand million (109) is mil millones. Spanish uses the long scale, so un billón is a million million (1012), un trillón is 1018, and the RAE warns against using billón for the American billion.
- Should I write 16 as dieciséis or diez y seis?
- Dieciséis. The Ortografía de la lengua española (2010) writes 16 to 19 and 21 to 29 as single words. The three-word forms such as diez y seis are older spellings that are no longer recommended.
- How do I read a decimal like 3,14 in Spanish?
- As tres coma catorce in Spain; this tool reads the digits one at a time (tres coma uno cuatro), which is unambiguous. Much of Latin America uses a point and says punto, so you can choose coma or punto.
- What is the difference between primer and primero?
- Primero is the full masculine ordinal; primer is its shortened form before a masculine singular noun (el primer día). The same applies to tercero and tercer. The feminine primera and tercera never shorten.
