Research database
Also called: academic database, subscription database
A searchable collection of scholarly content, usually licensed by a library, covering a discipline or a publisher's catalogue.
PubMed, JSTOR, Scopus, PsycINFO, IEEE Xplore and their peers differ in what they index and how they let you search. Choosing the right one is most of the work in a literature search: a medical question belongs in PubMed, a literary one in MLA International Bibliography.
Cite the article, not the database. Modern styles dropped the “Retrieved from JSTOR” pattern — the database is how you reached the source, not part of its identity. The exception is content that exists only there, such as a database-only dissertation collection.
