How to Cite a Press Release

  1. 1. Enter the release details. The issuing organization is the author — press releases rarely credit an individual writer. Add the release's title, the exact date it was issued (organizations publish many releases per year, so the day matters), and the URL of the newsroom page.
  2. 2. Pick a style. Choose APA, MLA, Chicago, or any of the 10,832 styles. APA adds a [Press release] descriptor after the italicized title, with the full date in the reference and just the organization and year in the in-text citation.
  3. 3. Generate. We build a full press-release reference. Edit any field, then copy or export it to BibTeX, RIS, CSV, or Word.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I generate a citation for a press release?
Enter the issuing organization as the author, the press release's title, the exact date it was issued, and the URL, then pick your citation style and click Generate Citation. The organization — a company, agency, or university — is always the author; press releases rarely name individual writers.
How do I cite a press release in APA 7th edition?
APA lists the organization, the full date in parentheses, the italicized title followed by a '[Press release]' descriptor, and the URL — for example: U.S. Food and Drug Administration. (2026, March 4). FDA approves new treatment [Press release]. https://www.fda.gov/...
Do I use the full date or just the year?
Use the full date. Organizations issue many releases per year, so APA and MLA both want the exact day — APA as (2026, March 4), MLA as 4 Mar. 2026. Only the in-text APA citation shortens to the organization and year.
What is the difference between citing a press release and a news article about it?
A press release is a primary source written by the organization itself; a news article about the announcement is a secondary source by a journalist. Cite the press release when you quote the organization's own words, and cite the newspaper article — with our newspaper citation generator — when you rely on the reporter's coverage or analysis.
How do I cite a press release found in a database or archive?
Cite it as usual and use the URL of the archive or database page where you retrieved it (for example a PR Newswire or Wayback Machine link) if the original page is gone. The organization and original issue date stay the same.
Which citation styles does the press release generator support?
All 10,832 styles in our library, including APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, and Vancouver. Choose your style before or after entering the details and the reference reformats instantly. The tool is 100% free with no sign-up.
