How to Cite a Manuscript
- 1. Enter the document and its location. Type the author, the document's title (or a bracketed description like "[Letter to E. Bronte]" if it has none), the date, and — crucially — the collection name, the repository that holds it, and the repository's city. Chicago style also wants box and folder numbers from the finding aid.

- How do I generate a citation for a manuscript or archival document?

- What information do archives citations need that books don't?
- Because an archival item exists in one physical place, the citation must say where to find it: the name of the collection, the repository (library or archive) that holds it, and the repository's city. In Chicago style you also give the finding aid's box and folder numbers, e.g. 'Box 12, Folder 3, Jane Doe Papers, University Library, Springfield, IL'.
- How do I cite an unpublished manuscript in APA?
- APA 7th puts the author and year first, then the title in italics followed by a bracketed description such as '[Unpublished manuscript]' — or '[Manuscript in preparation]' or '[Manuscript submitted for publication]' if that better matches its status — and finally the department and institution, or the collection and repository for archival items.
