Important: APA treats a personal interview differently

In APA 7th, an interview you conducted yourself is personal communication — you cite it in-text only, e.g. (J. Smith, personal communication, March 4, 2024), and it does not appear in the reference list. In MLA, Chicago, and Harvard, the same personal interview does get a full entry. A published or broadcast interview (magazine, newspaper, podcast, TV) is cited by its published form and appears in the bibliography in every style, including APA.

How to Cite an Interview

  1. 1. Gather the details. Note the interviewee, the interviewer, the date, and — for a published or broadcast interview — the publication, program, or URL where it appeared.
  2. 2. Enter them & pick a style. The generator above opens on the Interview source type — fill the fields in and choose APA, MLA, Chicago, or any of the 10,832 styles.
  3. 3. Cite correctly. We build a full reference. Use it for MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and IEEE; for an APA personal interview, use the in-text personal communication form instead of a reference-list entry. Edit any field, then copy or export it to BibTeX, RIS, CSV, or Word.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I generate a citation for an interview?
The generator above opens on the Interview source type. Enter the interviewee (the person being interviewed), the interviewer, the date, and the publication or program where it appeared — add a URL if it has one. Pick your citation style and click Generate Citation. CitationEasy formats the reference and you can edit any field before copying or exporting it.
How do I cite an interview in APA vs MLA?
The rules differ sharply. In APA 7th, an interview you conducted yourself counts as personal communication: you cite it in-text only — (J. Smith, personal communication, March 4, 2024) — and it does NOT appear in the reference list. A published or recorded interview is cited by its published form (the article, podcast episode, or broadcast). In MLA 9th, both personal and published interviews DO appear in the Works Cited list: Interviewee last name, First name. Interview. Conducted by Interviewer, Day Month Year.
Should a personal interview go in the reference list or works cited?
It depends on the style. APA treats a personal (unpublished) interview as personal communication and keeps it out of the reference list — it is cited in-text only because readers cannot retrieve it. MLA, Chicago, and Harvard generally do list personal interviews. Use the reference the generator produces for MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and IEEE; for APA, use the in-text personal-communication form instead of a reference-list entry.
How do I cite a published or broadcast interview?
A published interview (in a magazine, newspaper, or website) or a broadcast interview (TV, radio, or podcast) is cited by its published form. Enter the interviewee as the author, the interviewer, the date, and the publication or program in the Publication / Program field, plus the URL. These interviews appear in the reference list or Works Cited in every style, including APA — the personal-communication exception only applies to interviews you conducted that are not publicly available.
Which citation styles does the interview generator support?
All 10,832 styles in our library, including APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver, and AMA. Choose your style before or after entering the details and the reference reformats instantly.

Yes. It is 100% free with no sign-up, no ads, and no limits. Your citations are saved locally in your browser and can be exported to BibTeX, RIS, CSV, or Word.
