- Filler words are words and phrases that add little or no meaning — very, really, just, actually, basically, literally, kind of, sort of, in order to. Cutting them almost always makes a sentence stronger without changing what it says.
- How does the filler word finder work?
- The tool scans your text against a list of about 40 common filler words and phrases, highlights every occurrence, counts how often each one appears, and calculates your overall filler density as a percentage of total words.
- What is a good filler word density?
- Under about 3% of your total words is tight writing. Between 3% and 6% is moderate — worth a trim. Above 6% your prose is likely padded, and cutting fillers will noticeably sharpen it.
- Should I delete every filler word?
- No. Sometimes 'just' or 'really' carries genuine emphasis or softens tone deliberately. Review each highlight and ask whether the sentence loses anything without it — if not, cut it.
