- How does the duplicate citation finder work?
- Each entry is normalized (lowercased, punctuation and extra spaces removed) and every pair of entries is compared with a word-overlap similarity score. Identical normalized entries are flagged as exact duplicates; pairs that are at least 80% similar are flagged as likely duplicates.
- What counts as a near-duplicate?
- Two entries whose word sets overlap by 80% or more — typically the same source typed twice with small differences, like a missing DOI, a different page range, or "and" versus "&" between authors.
- Can the tool be wrong?
- Yes. The similarity score is a heuristic, not a bibliographic match. Two different papers by the same authors in the same journal can look similar, and the same source cited in two very different styles can slip below the threshold. Always review each flagged pair yourself before deleting anything.
- How should I paste my reference list?
- One entry per line, or separate entries with a blank line — the tool detects blank-line-separated paragraphs and rejoins wrapped hanging-indent lines automatically.
- Is my reference list sent to a server?
- No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is uploaded or stored.
