ORCID Publication List Generator

Enter an ORCID iD and turn the public works on that record into a formatted publication list — for a CV, a grant application or an annual review — in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago author-date, Harvard, Vancouver or IEEE. Pick the works to include, then copy the list or download it as .bib or .ris. Free, no sign-up.

Sixteen characters in four groups, or the full https://orcid.org/ link. The last character may be X.

Enter an ORCID iD and fetch its public works.

Your browser reads the record from ORCID's public API (pub.orcid.org). Works with a DOI are looked up, and every work is formatted, by CitationEasy's citation service.

How to Use the ORCID Publication List Generator

  1. 1. Enter the ORCID iD. Sixteen characters such as 0000-0002-1825-0097, with or without hyphens, or the full orcid.org link. A mistyped digit is caught before anything is fetched.
  2. 2. Fetch the works. Every public work on the record is listed, newest first, with its type, year, journal and DOI.
  3. 3. Choose the works and a style. Tick what belongs on the list — up to 100 at a time — and pick APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago author-date, Harvard, Vancouver or IEEE.
  4. 4. Format, then copy or download. Copy the list as plain text or with hanging indents for Word, or download .bib for LaTeX and .ris for a reference manager.

Where Each Reference Comes From

ORCID's list of works gives each one's title, type, date, journal and identifiers but not its authors, so every work is filled in from the best source available:

  • Works with a DOI are looked up by CitationEasy's citation service in the DOI registry's own record — Crossref's or DataCite's — which holds the full author list, volume, issue and pages.
  • Works without a DOI, or whose DOI cannot be resolved, are built from ORCID itself: the contributor list the source recorded and, where the source attached one, the work's BibTeX citation.
  • Works with no author list anywhere in ORCID are given the record owner's name alone and flagged, so you can add the co-authors before the list goes out.

Every reference is then formatted by the same engine as CitationEasy's citation generator, using the published Citation Style Language definition of each style. The list stays newest first, the order most CVs and funders use for publications.

How the iD Is Checked: ISO 7064 MOD 11-2

The last character of an ORCID iD is a check character worked out from the first fifteen digits with the ISO 7064 MOD 11-2 algorithm. Starting from zero, each digit is added to a running total and the total is doubled. The check character is (12 − the remainder of the total ÷ 11) mod 11, and a result of 10 is written X.

Running total after each of the 15 digits

0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 4, 10, 36, 76, 162, 324, 648, 1314

Remainder

1314 ÷ 11 leaves 5

Check character

(12 − 5) mod 11 = 7, the iD's last digit

A single mistyped digit always changes the result, and so does swapping two different neighbouring digits, so the tool can tell you the iD is wrong — and what its last character should be — before ORCID is asked.

Tips for a CV Publication List

  • Bring ORCID up to date first. The list can only show what the record holds; add missing works in ORCID — importing them from Crossref or Scopus is quickest — and fetch again.
  • Mark your own name in bold or underline if your field expects it, after pasting the list into your CV: the copy is plain text, like the site's other exports, so italics and bold are yours to add.
  • Group by type when a funder asks for it — articles, then chapters, then preprints — by formatting one type at a time.
  • Look out for doubles. ORCID merges records that share an identifier, but a preprint and its published article have different DOIs and appear as two works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I export my publications from ORCID?
ORCID itself exports the works on your record as BibTeX from the Works section. To get a formatted list instead, enter your iD here: the tool fetches the public works, formats the ones you choose in your style and also downloads them as .bib or .ris.
Can I make a CV publication list in APA format from ORCID?
Yes. Fetch your works, choose APA 7 and press Format. Works with a DOI are formatted from their full registry record and the rest from ORCID's own data, flagged where ORCID lists no co-authors. Copy the result with hanging indents and paste it straight into Word.
Why are some of my works missing?
ORCID's public API returns only works whose visibility is set to Everyone, so works marked Trusted parties or Only me do not appear. Make the works public in ORCID, or add any that are not on the record yet, and fetch again. Copies of the same work from several sources are shown once.
Why does a work show only my name as its author?
ORCID's work summaries carry no contributors, and some sources never record them at all. When a work has no DOI and ORCID lists nobody for it, the tool puts in the record owner's name so the reference is complete, and marks it so you can add the co-authors.
What is an ORCID iD?
A free, persistent identifier for researchers — sixteen characters such as 0000-0002-1825-0097 — that stays the same through name changes and moves between institutions. Publishers, funders and universities use it to connect your work to you. The example on this page belongs to Josiah Carberry, the fictional researcher ORCID keeps for testing.
What is sent where?
Your browser reads the public record from ORCID's API at pub.orcid.org. The works you format — and the DOIs of those that have one — are sent to CitationEasy's citation service to be looked up and formatted. Nothing private is needed: the tool sees only what the record shows everyone.
