How to Cite a Source with No Author

Missing author information is one of the most common citation challenges students face. This comprehensive guide explains how to handle sources without authors in APA, MLA, and Chicago citation styles with clear examples for each situation.

Understanding the Problem

Many sources, particularly websites, reports, and organizational documents, don't list individual authors. Instead, they may be written by organizations, teams, or remain anonymous. Each citation style has specific rules for handling these situations.

The key is to provide enough information for readers to locate the source while following your citation style's specific format. Never use "Anonymous" or "Anon." unless the source explicitly labels itself as such.

APA Style: Sources with No Author

Basic Rules for APA 7th Edition

When no author is listed, move the title to the author position in your reference list. Use the first few words of the title for in-text citations, formatted in title case and surrounded by quotation marks (for articles) or italics (for books).

Reference list format:

Title of work. (Year, Month Day). Publisher or Website Name. URL

MLA"Title." Container, Publisher, Date.("Short Title")

Special Cases and Exceptions

When the Publisher is Also the Author

If the organization that published the work is also the author, you may need to list it only once (check your specific style guide). In APA, if the author and publisher are the same, omit the publisher name.

Government Documents

For government documents without individual authors, use the government agency as the author. Start with the largest entity and work down to the specific department.

APA Example:

U.S. Department of Education. (2024). National education statistics. https://nces.ed.gov/statistics

Sacred or Classical Texts

Religious texts and classical works often have no authors. These typically don't require reference list entries but should be cited in the text with standard abbreviations and verse/chapter numbers.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't use "Anonymous" unless the source explicitly states "Anonymous" as the author
  • Don't use "Anon." as a substitute for a missing author
  • Don't skip citations just because there's no author—you still must cite the source
  • Don't confuse website name with author—these serve different purposes in citations
  • Don't forget to use shortened titles in in-text citations for APA and MLA

Tips for Finding Author Information

  • Top and bottom of the webpage or document
  • About page or author bio section
  • Copyright information
  • Organizational attribution (may be considered the author)
  • Social media profiles linked to the content
  • Contact page or staff directory
