The identifier for a preprint on arXiv, in the form 2403.01234, with a version suffix marking which revision you read.
arXiv IDs since 2007 take the form YYMM.NNNNN — year, month, and a sequence number. A trailing v2 or v3 identifies the revision, and it matters: authors revise preprints, sometimes substantially, so citing “2403.01234v1” is a stronger claim than citing the bare ID.
Cite the published version if one exists, because peer review may have changed the conclusions. Where you cite the preprint, label it as such — most styles want an explicit “Preprint” or “[Preprint]” marker so a reader knows the work is not peer-reviewed.
