Lined Paper Generator

Print ruled paper at its real spacing: wide, college or narrow ruled, primary handwriting lines with a dashed midline, or any spacing you choose. Add a margin line and a name line, pick the colors, and print on Letter or A4 — or download an SVG or PNG.

35 lines per page · 0.281 in apart (7.1 mm).

Prints at true size: in the print dialog choose the same paper, set Scale to 100% (Actual size), and turn off Fit to page and Headers and footers.

How to Use the Lined Paper Generator

  1. 1. Choose the ruling. Wide, college or narrow ruled; Primary for handwriting practice with a dashed midline; or Custom spacing for any distance between lines.
  2. 2. Set the paper and margins. Letter or A4, portrait or landscape, in inches or millimeters. The top margin leaves room for a heading; the side and bottom margins keep lines inside the printable area.
  3. 3. Add the extras. A vertical margin line (1¼ inches from the left by default), a name-and-date line, the line weight, and the colors of the rules and the margin line.
  4. 4. Print at 100%. Match the paper size in the print dialog, set the scale to 100% (Actual size) and turn off Fit to page and headers and footers. Or download an SVG or a 300 dpi PNG.

Ruling Sizes Explained

"Ruling" is the distance from one line to the next. The three standard US rulings are fixed fractions of an inch, and the generator draws them exactly; the line counts below are for Letter paper with the default 1-inch top margin and quarter-inch bottom margin.

RulingLine spacingLines on a Letter pageUsual users
Wide (legal) ruled11/32 in ≈ 8.7 mm29Younger students and larger handwriting
College (medium) ruled9/32 in ≈ 7.1 mm35Middle school, high school and college notes
Narrow ruled1/4 in ≈ 6.4 mm40Small handwriting, dense notes, math working

Many UK and European exercise books use metric ruling instead — 8 mm with a margin is common. Choose Custom spacing in millimeters to match it.

US notebook paper traditionally has a vertical margin line about 1¼ inches from the left edge, usually red or pink, with light blue rules. Those are the defaults here; change the position or turn the margin line off for a plain sheet.

Primary Handwriting Lines

Primary paper is ruled in sets of three: a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline. Letters are sized against them. Tall letters and capitals — b, d, h, k, l, T — reach from the baseline to the top line; short letters such as a, c, e, o and s reach only the dashed midline; and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop below the baseline into the clear band before the next set. The generator leaves half the writing height clear between sets for those descenders.

Writing height and rows per page

3/4 in writing height, Letter, default margins

Each row takes 3/4 in plus a 3/8 in gap, so 9 rows fit.

Common heights

About 1 in for beginning writers; 3/4, 5/8 or 1/2 in as handwriting becomes smaller and steadier

Handwriting programs and schools differ on which height suits which grade, so treat the presets as starting points and choose what matches the size your students actually write.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between wide ruled and college ruled paper?
The spacing. Wide ruled paper has 11/32 inch (about 8.7 mm) between lines and college ruled has 9/32 inch (about 7.1 mm), so college ruled fits more lines on a page and suits smaller handwriting. Narrow ruled is tighter still, at 1/4 inch (about 6.4 mm).
How many lines are on a sheet of college ruled paper?
It depends on the margins. On Letter paper with a 1-inch top margin and a quarter-inch bottom margin, college ruling gives 35 lines, wide ruling 29 and narrow ruling 40. Change the top margin and the generator shows the new count.
What is primary lined paper?
Primary paper is handwriting paper for early writers: each writing row has a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline, so children can see how tall each letter should be. Choose Primary and set the writing height — 1 inch, 3/4 inch, 5/8 inch or your own.
Can I print lined paper on A4?
Yes. Choose A4 and the sheet is drawn at 210 × 297 mm. The standard US rulings work on A4 too, or switch the units to millimeters and enter a metric spacing such as 8 mm.
How do I print lined paper at the correct size?
Select the same paper size in your print dialog, set Scale to 100% or Actual size, and turn off Fit to page and Headers and footers. The page is drawn in real units, so the spacing on paper matches the spacing you chose.
Can I change the line color?
Yes. Pick any color for the rules and a separate one for the margin line. Light blue rules with a red or pink margin are the traditional notebook look; gray rules photocopy more evenly.
